A team of trekkers from the Hope Voyage Campaign has embarked on a challenging 2,200km journey from Abu Dhabi to Yemen to raise $200,000 for humanitarian projects in Yemen. The expedition, which began on January 1, 2025, has already faced numerous desert challenges, including runaway camels, injuries, and harsh weather.
Led by desert explorer Mike Etzger and hiker Daniel Schenkeveld, the team includes four temporary trekkers and two camels, Mashhour and Fatr Samha, who carry supplies. However, the unpredictable Fatr Samha caused significant disruptions, escaping multiple times and injuring trekker Mohseen Suliman, forcing him to end his journey early.
Overcoming Desert Challenges
The group faced harsh conditions, from scorching heat to a sudden rainstorm that forced them into a cramped tent. Supplies frequently slipped off the camels, requiring improvised repairs. Despite the difficulties, trekkers bonded over survival skills, such as starting fires, identifying desert plants, and cooking root vegetables.
“We’ve faced incredible challenges, but the camaraderie and shared experiences make this trek unforgettable,” said Etzger.
Supporting Yemen’s Recovery
The trek’s purpose goes beyond adventure, aiming to fund life-saving initiatives in Yemen:
- Medical Clinics: Supporting healthcare in remote areas through the Nesma & Sindbad Medical Clinic.
- Clean Water Access: Building two freshwater wells to combat water scarcity.
- Livestock Training: Empowering Yemenis with skills to breed livestock, creating thousands of sustainable jobs annually.
The campaign is already seeing success, with several students graduating from its Livestock Breeding Training Program and establishing livelihoods.
As the Hope Voyage continues deeper into the desert, its mission remains a beacon of hope for Yemen’s recovery, combining adventure with impactful humanitarian efforts.
