Dubai, UAE: Trail racing is rapidly gaining traction in the UAE, with runners discovering the joys of connecting with nature and meeting fellow enthusiasts. This year, over 350 runners from around the globe flocked to the UAE for the inaugural G.O.A.T race, set in the stunning mountains of Ras Al Khaimah. This challenging event, which kicked off at Wadi Ghalilah Dam in Jebel Jais, offered participants 30km and 50km routes with elevations reaching 3,300m.
A Tough Challenge and New Discoveries
Dana Matar, co-founder of Peak Sports and organizer of the race, noted the unique challenge posed by the region’s rugged terrain. “Many visitors come for the vibrant city life, unaware of the breathtaking trails in Ras Al Khaimah, Hatta, and Fujairah. But that's changing as more people are drawn to the trail running scene,” she said, emphasizing the growing popularity of this sport.
Trail running has transitioned from a niche activity to a mainstream pursuit, with over 20 million registered trail runners worldwide. In the UAE, a rising number of athletes are opting for the thrill of rocky terrains, muddy paths, and mountain trails instead of the city streets.
Building Community Through Sport
Matar founded her sports company in 2022, aiming to create a community of adventure enthusiasts and organize international-standard trail races. The company has expanded its race offerings, including the Al Qudra Trail Race during Ramadan and the upcoming Last 1 Standing, a 12-hour endurance challenge in Hatta.
“Trail running allows you to reconnect with nature and focus on the present moment,” Matar explained. “It’s not just about fitness; it’s about mental wellbeing and finding freedom in the outdoors. The sport’s inclusive community fosters a supportive environment where everyone can enjoy the experience, regardless of skill level.”
Embracing New Faces in the Community
As the cooler months arrive, trail running groups in the UAE are seeing an influx of new members eager to join. One of the largest communities, Trail Runners DXB, boasts over 1,000 members across various WhatsApp groups. Co-founder Samer Bou Kaedbey shared that weekend runs typically attract 35 to 50 participants, with new faces joining regularly.
“Many beginners join us not only to enhance their trail running skills but also to connect with others who share their adventurous spirit,” he said. “Trail running is more enjoyable with a group; it’s about camaraderie as much as competition.”
Choucrallah Karam, a health management consultant and Trail Runners DXB member, described trail running as the perfect blend of adventure and fitness. Since discovering the sport a year ago, he has set ambitious goals for himself, including completing three ultra-distance races within six months.
The UAE as a Global Trail Running Destination
The UAE's diverse landscapes make it an appealing destination for global endurance athletes. Runners enjoy a range of trail experiences, from desert runs to coastal paths and mountainous terrain. Many enthusiasts explore hidden trails using navigation apps, discovering new challenges along the way.
Government organizations, such as the Ras Al Khaimah Tourism Development Authority and the Dubai Sports Council, are actively promoting trail running through events and infrastructure development. For example, last year, the Dubai Municipality opened a new 9.7 km hiking trail in Mushrif National Park, enhancing training options for athletes.
Adriana Fernandez, an experienced trail runner, appreciates the variety of terrains available in the UAE. She highlights the opportunity to train for international races in a safe and accessible environment, attracting runners from across the region.
Prioritizing Safety and Environmental Care
While the thrill of trail running is undeniable, experts stress the importance of safety and environmental responsibility. Ivana Kolaric, a Dubai-based running coach, trains athletes for local and international ultra-trail competitions. She emphasizes that trail running can be enjoyed at any pace and encourages newcomers to join groups for guidance and support.
“Proper gear and safety measures are crucial,” Matar said. “Our races enforce strict gear requirements, and runners must respect both their safety and the environment. Essentials include trail shoes, a first-aid kit, hydration vests, and navigation tools.”
Trail racing not only promotes physical fitness but also fosters a sense of community and environmental stewardship. With a growing number of enthusiasts taking to the trails, trail running in the UAE is set to flourish, offering a unique way to explore the region's natural beauty while building lasting connections.
