Dubai: A growing number of UAE residents are embracing a new travel trend known as ‘voluntourism,’ combining their vacations with volunteer activities to give back to local communities and the environment. From beach cleanups to animal conservation projects, these travelers are seeking meaningful experiences that go beyond sightseeing.
Rohit Garg, a Dubai-based Indian professional, recently participated in a recycling initiative during his trip to Beirut. “I had the privilege of volunteering at a recycling station, collecting plastic bottles after an event. It was incredible to work alongside young Lebanese students whose energy and love for their city were inspiring,” Garg shared. As a team leader, he felt a deep sense of connection with the local community. “The experience left me with a greater appreciation for Beirut’s vibrant spirit. It was a perfect blend of travel and service, encapsulating the true essence of voluntourism,” he added.
Similarly, Hadi Khaleel, a Dubai-based marketing executive, turned his trip to Mauritius into an opportunity to support the environment. “I joined a beach cleanup project aimed at preserving the island’s stunning coastline. Working alongside local volunteers to collect plastic waste made me realize how small actions can create a significant impact. It wasn’t just about cleaning the beach; it was about connecting with the community and contributing to something meaningful,” he said.
Voluntourism’s Rising Popularity
According to Sapna Aidasani, marketing director at Pluto Travels, voluntourism has grown significantly in the post-Covid era, fueled by an increased awareness of corporate social responsibility (CSR). “The pandemic heightened people’s desire to make a difference, leading to a surge in voluntourism initiatives,” she noted.
Sapna recently curated a special voluntourism package for 25 delegates from Dubai who traveled to Africa to support underprivileged communities. “Voluntourism allows travelers to explore new destinations while creating a meaningful impact on others' lives,” she said. Animal welfare projects, such as supporting wildlife orphanages, have also become popular among voluntourists.
Sapna recalled a memorable project where a group of children traveled to the Far East for a beach cleanup. “It was inspiring to see young travelers engaging in sustainable tourism practices. This trend presents a great opportunity for the travel industry to promote positive change,” she added.
Eco-Focused Initiatives
Sustainability and conservation are at the heart of voluntourism, with resorts and travel providers introducing eco-friendly programs. Abdulla Aboobakur, general manager at Nova Maldives, highlighted how his resort offers hands-on activities such as coral sponsorship and planting sessions at their Floating Coral Nursery. “Guests actively participate in reef cleaning and marine conservation efforts under the guidance of our resident marine biologist,” he said. Other initiatives include floral workshops and cultural experiences that promote awareness of the local ecosystem.
At Long Beach Resort Mauritius, guests can explore a biodiversity trail and learn about the ecological importance of bees. “With over 470,000 bees thriving in ten hives, visitors can participate in beekeeping, taste fresh honey, and see how it’s incorporated into the resort’s culinary creations. It’s an immersive experience that blends nature with gastronomy,” said Christian Jaquier, the resort’s general manager.
Affordable and Impactful
Voluntourism can also be cost-effective, making it accessible to a broader audience. Rikant Pittie, CEO and co-founder of EaseMyTrip, noted that many volunteer programs include accommodations and meals, often making them more affordable than traditional tourism. “This form of travel appeals to socially conscious tourists who want meaningful experiences. As the trend grows, we expect more UAE residents to seek opportunities to combine their love for travel with global contributions,” Pittie said.
A Meaningful Way to Travel
Voluntourism is redefining how UAE residents view travel. It’s no longer just about exploring new destinations but about forming connections, fostering sustainability, and making a positive impact. As more people embrace this trend, it has the potential to transform travel into a force for good, benefitting both travelers and the communities they visit.
