Schools in the UAE are gearing up for their mid-term break in February, with schedules varying across institutions. Some schools will observe a full week off from Monday, February 10 to Friday, February 14, providing a nine-day holiday when weekends are included. Other schools will have a shorter break from Wednesday, February 12 to Friday, February 14, resulting in a four-day break. A few institutions will offer only a two-day break, on Thursday, February 13, and Friday, February 14, with students returning on Monday, February 17.

Adjustments During Ramadan

As Ramadan approaches, expected to begin on March 1, schools will implement shorter school days. Educators have assured that the syllabus will be adjusted to maintain a balanced approach and ensure continued learning during this period.

The Importance of Breaks

The flexibility in holiday scheduling is granted to schools to ensure they meet the required 182 school days for the international curriculum. Some institutions have chosen to hold their half-term break from Friday, February 14 to Monday, February 17.

Lisa Johnson, principal at the American Academy for Girls, emphasized the importance of short breaks, stating that they help students and families recharge. "Research shows that periodic breaks improve focus, reduce stress, and enhance overall well-being, which is essential for maintaining a balanced and effective learning environment," she explained.

Curriculum Planning and Breaks

Principals have planned the school calendar well in advance, taking into account the breaks for balanced curriculum progress. Neetha Shetty, principal at Al Diyafah High School, explained that approximately 60 to 70% of the curriculum is covered before the mid-term break in senior classes, while 50 to 60% is covered in primary classes.

She also emphasized the value of breaks for educators, noting that teaching is a demanding profession. "Breaks provide educators with the opportunity to recuperate mentally and physically, preventing burnout and helping to enhance productivity."

Pre-Approved School Calendars

School calendars are typically approved by relevant authorities at the end of the previous academic year. This advance planning allows teachers to complete long-term subject planning, ensuring all lessons are covered, including mid-term breaks and national holidays.

Lisa Passante, principal at Star International School, noted that the mid-term break at her school is set from Monday, February 10 to Wednesday, February 12. "These breaks provide an opportunity to reset and return to school with renewed energy," she added. Additionally, the school has aligned its holidays with others in the region, offering families a more cohesive schedule.
