In the UAE, the concept of a "pay-cation"—working while on vacation—is becoming increasingly popular, particularly among millennials and Gen Z. Unlike “bleisure,” which mixes business trips with leisure activities, a pay-cation involves working during holidays, leaving little room for true time off.
Why Are Employees Working on Vacation?
The fast-paced, competitive work environment in the UAE often pressures employees to stay connected even during their leave. Aws Ismail, General Manager at Marc Ellis, Dubai, attributes this trend to the need for employees to prove their reliability and avoid falling behind.
“As an employer, I don’t think it has to be this way,” Ismail said. “Proper planning, meeting deadlines, and handing over tasks effectively can allow employees to disconnect without stress. Employers need to foster a culture that supports true breaks to prevent burnout and enhance team efficiency.”
Some companies are incentivizing flexibility while maintaining productivity. Nicki Wilson, Founder of Genie Recruitment, shared her initiative of offering employees AED 1,000 to work from any location for a week. “This flexibility enriches their lives with new experiences and promotes creativity, which ultimately fuels growth,” Wilson explained.
The Importance of Taking Proper Breaks
Doctors in the UAE emphasize the critical need for employees to take genuine time off to maintain their mental and physical well-being.
“Continuous work without proper downtime can lead to burnout, increased stress, and a decline in overall health,” said Dr. Nada Omer, Consultant Psychiatrist at Burjeel Hospital, Abu Dhabi. “It’s vital to step away from work periodically to recharge and rejuvenate.”
Dr. Omer also warned of the mental and physical toll of overwork, including anxiety, depression, sleep disturbances, and cardiovascular problems. Wellness experts echoed the importance of setting boundaries to disconnect from work and focus on personal time.
Striking a Balance
Life coach and energy healer Girish Hemnani highlighted the need to balance freedom and responsibility. “Freedom fuels creativity, while responsibility grounds it. Finding this balance is key to a fulfilling work-life dynamic,” he said.
The growing trend of pay-cations reflects a shift in work culture, but experts caution against neglecting the need for true vacations. Proper breaks are essential for maintaining a healthy work-life balance, fostering creativity, and ensuring long-term productivity.
