Al Jazeera Al Hamra, one of the UAE's oldest villages, is undergoing a transformation to become a major tourist destination. The 17th-century village, known for its traditional Emirati architecture and rich cultural heritage, is being restored to give visitors a glimpse into life during the region's pearling era.
A Glimpse into the Past
The village, founded by the Al Zaab tribe, is named "Al Jazeera Al Hamra" or "Red Island" due to its unique red sands. Abandoned in the 1970s, restoration efforts began in 2010 and continue today, preserving its historical essence.
Paul Griffiths, CEO of Al Jazeera Al Hamra, explained that the goal is restoration rather than rebuilding. “We’re keeping some ruins intact to show visitors what the site looked like,” he said.
The village spans 45 hectares and includes around 500 homes, coral-stone buildings, and a souq that once served as a bustling marketplace.
Key Landmarks
- The Fort: One of the first structures renovated in 2016, this round watchtower was a military base and the Sheikh’s residence. Today, it hosts public events and performances.
- Masjid Bint Samikh: A mosque renovated in the 1950s, it showcases a classical minaret inspired by the Al Ahsa region.
- Merchant Homes: Built from coral stone and beach rock, these homes highlight traditional Emirati craftsmanship.
Future Plans
Griffiths revealed that plans are underway to build an indoor museum, allowing visitors to explore the heritage village year-round. The museum will feature oral and video accounts from former residents, bringing the village’s history to life.
The site’s strategic location near hotels and resorts makes it an ideal cultural destination for tourists visiting Ras Al Khaimah.
Events and Accessibility
Al Jazeera Al Hamra has already hosted events like a Christmas market and the upcoming 13th edition of the RAK Art Festival.
The village is open to visitors Tuesday to Sunday from 9 AM to 5 PM, with free admission. Designated parking areas and clear signage ensure easy access to the heritage site.
A World-Class Heritage Site
Efforts to restore Al Jazeera Al Hamra reflect Ras Al Khaimah’s ambition to make it a must-visit destination. “Like Pompeii in Naples, we want everyone visiting RAK to feel they must see this heritage site,” Griffiths said.
With ongoing restoration and future developments, Al Jazeera Al Hamra is poised to become a key cultural attraction in the UAE.
