The UAE has announced the establishment of a new Ministry of Family to enhance family cohesion, parenting skills, and child well-being across the country. Led by Sanaa Suhail, the ministry aims to address the challenges families face, providing clearer guidelines and resources to improve work-life balance, safeguard children's rights, and prepare couples for marriage.
Experts have expressed optimism about the ministry's potential impact. Family therapist Cindi Santos highlighted how family dynamics often face risks like communication difficulties, work-life imbalance, and unaddressed mental health issues. She emphasized the importance of initiatives such as parenting workshops, mental health programs, and family counselling to de-stigmatize seeking help for family-related challenges. "This ministry can create a culture where families feel supported and empowered," she said.
Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice-President and Prime Minister of the UAE, outlined the ministry’s objectives, including fostering stable families, increasing fertility rates among citizens, and mitigating risks of family breakdown. The ministry will also regulate social service providers and train personnel in the sector to maintain consistent standards.
Sociologist Dr. Amina Al Hamadi stressed the need for marriage preparation programs to equip couples with skills for cohesive family building. She noted that such initiatives could strengthen marital bonds and ensure families are established on solid foundations. Additionally, psychologist Dr. Omar Khaled highlighted the significance of regulating social service institutions to foster collaboration, share best practices, and improve the quality of family support programs.
With these initiatives, the Ministry of Family has the potential to transform family dynamics in the UAE, addressing both modern challenges and traditional values to ensure a thriving and cohesive society.
