In the UAE, high-net-worth families are turning to cruise ships for their wedding celebrations, spending upwards of Dh3 million for these unique, luxurious experiences. This growing trend combines romance, luxury, and adventure, offering a seamless blend of venue, catering, accommodation, and entertainment.

The Rising Trend of Cruise Weddings

Cruise tourism is gaining popularity in the UAE, and with it comes a demand for weddings on the high seas. According to Naresh Rawal, Senior VP of Sales and Marketing at Resorts World Cruises, a recent pre-wedding ceremony for the daughter of an Indian industrialist chartered an entire cruise ship, hosting over 1,000 guests and featuring celebrity performances.

Cruise weddings typically cost around Dh3 million or more, depending on the scale and customization. Safeer Mahamood, General Manager of Holiday Makers, explained that exclusive charters of mid-sized ships require at least 1,500 guests, with costs starting at Dh2,000 per person on a twin-sharing basis.

Why Couples Choose Cruises

Cruise weddings offer unparalleled customization, from intimate sunset ceremonies to grand deck celebrations. Samir Hamadeh, CEO of Elevate DMC, highlighted that couples are drawn to the exclusivity, stunning oceanic backdrops, and the convenience of having everything in one place.

Naresh Rawal emphasized the flexibility of cruise services, noting that everything from menus to departure times can be tailored to suit guests’ preferences. For example, a recent event saw a cruise’s usual schedule adjusted to accommodate a midnight departure and extended dining hours.

Short vs. Long Cruises

The choice of cruise duration depends on the couple’s preferences and cultural traditions. Short cruises lasting three to four nights are popular among GCC residents and wedding groups looking for manageable yet memorable events. In contrast, longer cruises, often combining multiple destinations, are favored by non-GCC nationalities who extend their celebrations into elaborate honeymoons.

Cost-Effective Alternatives

Not all families opt for full ship charters. Some book smaller groups of cabins and reserve specific venues onboard for private ceremonies. This approach offers the grandeur and exclusivity of a cruise wedding without the high costs of an entire ship.

For example, Naresh mentioned an upcoming booking for a 300-guest wedding party. The group plans to sail to Oman, hold a ceremony at a religiously significant location, and return for an onboard reception.

A Unique Wedding Experience

Cruise weddings are redefining the way couples celebrate their special day. With stunning vistas, endless customization options, and the convenience of an all-in-one venue, these events combine elegance and adventure, making them a preferred choice for many UAE families. Whether it’s an intimate gathering or a grand celebration, cruise weddings offer a truly unforgettable experience.
