Dubai : Employers in the UAE are increasingly prioritizing skills and experience over traditional academic qualifications, marking a significant shift in hiring trends. According to HR experts and a new report by Innovations Group, businesses are focusing on real-world abilities, adaptability, and a strong work ethic rather than just degrees.

‘Can-Do Mentality’ Over Credentials

Recruiters emphasize that candidates who demonstrate practical skills and a proactive attitude are more likely to secure jobs.

Zoe Charlton, recruitment consultant at Genie Recruitment, stated that around 70% of hiring managers now focus primarily on skills, while only 15% consider educational background as a key factor in hiring decisions.

“We see entitled candidates who assume a degree alone guarantees them a high-paying job. That is no longer the case,” Charlton explained. “Clients today prefer candidates with hands-on experience and a strong work ethic over those with just academic qualifications.”

Skills Over Degrees in Emerging Industries

The shift towards skills-based hiring is particularly evident in industries such as cybersecurity, artificial intelligence, and digital marketing, where employers are selecting candidates based on practical experience, certifications, and project portfolios rather than university degrees.

Aws Ismail, general manager at Marc Ellis, Dubai, said:

“Companies now realize that a degree does not always guarantee the best fit for a role. What matters is a candidate’s ability to solve problems, adapt to challenges, and demonstrate real-world expertise.”

He also highlighted that professionals in tech and digital marketing are often chosen for their portfolio and certifications rather than formal education.

UAE Businesses Adapting to Changing Hiring Trends

LinkedIn report cited by recruiters revealed that 45% of UAE companies have already moved towards skills-based hiring.

HR professionals argue that companies must adapt to evolving workforce expectations and shift from degree-based hiring to competency-based recruitment.

Nikhil Nanda, Director at Innovations Group, emphasized the importance of strategic recruitment in overcoming skill mismatches.

“The UAE is a global talent hub, and businesses must adopt new hiring strategies to attract and retain skilled professionals.”

As the job market evolves, candidates with hands-on experience, strong portfolios, and relevant certifications are now leading the race for top positions in the UAE’s competitive employment landscape.
