Dubai: The UAE is set to implement mandatory genetic screening for all Emirati citizens planning to marry, starting in January 2025. This initiative aims to safeguard the health of future generations by identifying genetic risks and empowering families to make informed decisions about their future.
The screening will test 570 genes and cover over 840 genetic disorders. According to the Ministry of Health and Prevention (MoHAP), this initiative is an integral part of the premarital screening program and focuses on reducing the risk of hereditary diseases in children.
How the Screening Works
The process begins with a review of family medical histories, as explained by Dr. Shanitha Fathima, a specialist in obstetrics and gynecology. “We look at family health patterns and recommend genetic testing if any hereditary conditions are identified,” she said.
The test itself is simple and involves collecting a sample of blood or saliva. According to Dr. Rehab Yousuf Al Saadi, Head of Family Medicine at Saudi German Hospital Dubai, “The samples are analyzed for genetic conditions, and results are usually available within 14 days.”
Genetic Compatibility and Next Steps
The screening determines genetic compatibility between couples. If no shared genetic mutations are detected, couples can proceed without concern. However, if both partners are carriers of the same gene, further consultations are needed. Genetic counselors and clinical geneticists help couples understand their options and the potential risks to their children.
Key Benefits of Testing
Genetic testing identifies conditions like sickle cell anemia and thalassemia, helping families plan for healthier futures. Dr. Al Saadi highlighted the importance of prevention: “Early detection allows us to prepare and reduce the likelihood of passing on genetic disorders.”
For couples with shared genetic risks, advanced medical techniques such as pre-implantation genetic diagnosis (PGD) combined with in-vitro fertilization (IVF) provide hope. “This process ensures that embryos free from the genetic condition are selected for implantation,” Dr. Fathima explained.
Availability and Cost
Genetic testing will be offered at both public and private healthcare facilities in the UAE. While the exact cost of the tests is yet to be finalized, government subsidies are expected to make the process affordable for Emirati citizens.
Raising Awareness
Doctors stress the importance of public awareness about genetic screening and its benefits. “Understanding hereditary risks and taking preventive measures can significantly improve family health outcomes,” said Dr. Fathima.
By making genetic testing mandatory, the UAE is taking a forward-thinking step towards improving public health and ensuring a brighter future for the next generation.
