Gaming cafés across the UAE have evolved from simple setups into vibrant spaces with cutting-edge technology and high-stakes esports tournaments. The Emirates Gaming League, for instance, features a staggering prize pool of Dh9 million, marking a milestone in the country’s growing gaming culture.

Gaming as Social Interaction

Cafés like Titan Gaming Café in Sharjah are at the forefront of this evolution. In just two and a half years, Titan has hosted over 75 tournaments, including two international events. The café even played host to the UAE’s first-ever Esports League, organized by the Emirates Esports Federation.

Co-founder Hamad Al-Shamsi highlighted the social aspect of gaming cafés, saying they cater to a wide audience beyond competitive players. "These cafés are places where people gather with friends, make memories, and enjoy gaming together," he said.

A Unique Experience

Many gamers, like Mohammed Munzir from Ajman, prefer the gaming café experience over playing at home. “It’s a stress-free environment where you can focus on the game without distractions,” said Munzir, who views gaming as an occasional escape rather than a daily habit.

For students, the cafés provide a designated space for relaxation after exams or study sessions. Munzir believes this helps maintain a healthy balance between gaming and daily responsibilities.

Challenges for the Industry

Despite the growing popularity of these spaces, some, like filmmaker and gamer Deena Stevens, are sceptical about their long-term viability. Stevens believes the comfort of custom PC setups at home poses a challenge for cafés.

“Some venues are outdated and need to modernize further to attract a broader audience, including more diverse esports tournaments and a welcoming environment for all genders,” Stevens said.

A Promising Future

As the UAE’s esports industry continues to grow, gaming cafés have the potential to expand further. With support from initiatives like the Emirates Esports Federation and prize pools in the millions, these spaces are becoming mainstream hubs for competitive and casual gamers alike.

The transformation of gaming cafés reflects a broader trend in the UAE, turning a once niche pastime into a dynamic and inclusive community experience.
