The UAE experienced an exceptionally cold weekend, with temperatures dipping below 2°C in some areas, leaving residents to witness rare frost and ice crystals. Heavy rainfall accompanied the chilling weather, with several regions recording significant precipitation.
Dr. Ahmed Habib, a climate expert at the National Centre of Meteorology (NCM), explained that such temperature fluctuations are typical of UAE winters, caused by dynamic atmospheric pressure systems. “Winter in the UAE is often marked by rapid changes in weather due to shifting pressure systems,” he said.
Temperature Rise Expected This Week
Following the cold snap, the UAE is set to warm up as high-pressure systems stabilize the region’s weather. “From Monday onwards, temperatures will increase gradually, rising by about four degrees,” Dr. Habib stated. He noted that areas that recorded highs of 24-25°C last week could see daytime temperatures climb to 28-29°C by January 7.
Rainfall and Atmospheric Changes
The chilly weekend was influenced by a cold air mass and moisture from the Arabian Sea, which intensified cloud cover across northern and eastern UAE, bringing heavy showers to cities like Dubai and Abu Dhabi. Expo Dubai recorded 14mm of rainfall by Friday noon, a notable yet seasonal amount for this time of year.
Dr. Habib also highlighted the role of cold air masses from Europe in driving down temperatures in the region, particularly in northern Gulf areas. These atmospheric interactions often result in colder, wetter conditions.
What Lies Ahead
With the transition to more stable weather, residents can expect milder days, but winter's unpredictability remains. As Dr. Habib explained, “Weather patterns in the UAE during winter can shift quickly, influenced by global atmospheric changes.”
The brief spell of frost and rain serves as a reminder of the region’s diverse climate, offering a rare glimpse of winter’s extremes in the UAE.
