As the UAE’s Flag Day approaches on November 1, the country is brimming with excitement. Residents are flocking to malls, souqs, and shops to find the perfect decorations and attire to express their national pride. From flags to scarves to children’s T-shirts, the vibrant hues of the UAE flag are taking over storefronts and homes alike. Among those preparing with enthusiasm is the Al Hammadi family, who make it a yearly tradition to celebrate. Umm Mohammed Al Hammadi, an Emirati mother of seven, was seen shopping for accessories in the UAE’s national colors. “This is the Emirati month,” she shared. “From Flag Day until National Day, we decorate and celebrate. Young or old, everyone loves this day.” Like the Al Hammadi family, many residents look forward to making their homes reflect their national pride.
Shopping Centers Burst with Patriotic Colors
Across Dubai and Sharjah, stores have come alive with red, green, white, and black decorations. Major retailers have expanded their patriotic offerings, with shelves stocked full of UAE-themed attire and home décor. Flags, T-shirts, hats, scarves, and even toys featuring the UAE flag are being displayed prominently. Scarves embroidered with images of the UAE's founders, such as the late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, add a sentimental touch to the celebrations. Embroidered phrases like ‘May your glory last, O homeland’ are resonating with customers, as many plan to dress in the national colors and gift their friends and families.
A Family Affair: Decorating Homes for Flag Day
Sisters Widema and Hessa Mohamed were among the enthusiastic shoppers, planning to replace their home’s flag and decorate for Flag Day. “We want our home to reflect the pride of this day,” Widema explained, noting the tradition of families gathering to celebrate. The sisters love seeing children and neighbors adorned with flags and scarves, showing the unity of the nation.
Retailers Prepare for Increased Demand
With the demand for patriotic items at an all-time high, stores are stocking up to meet customer needs. Retailers in Dubai and Sharjah have invested in a broader selection of goods, from various-sized flags to keychains, badges, and decorative banners. Stores like Emirates Markets in Sharjah have ramped up their stock, with owner Abdullah Abdul Rahim Al Zarouni sharing, “We strive to ensure customers find everything they need for these national occasions.”
In Sharjah’s Aswaq Al Seyouh Gifts, a whole section is dedicated to Flag Day merchandise, with continuous restocking to keep up with demand. This surge is expected to continue, with sales increasing as Flag Day and National Day festivities get closer.
The UAE’s Flag Day celebrations reflect a deep-rooted pride in the nation, as families and communities come together to honor the flag and the values it represents.
