Expats in the UAE from war-torn countries like Sudan, Palestine, and Ukraine are welcoming the New Year with cautious optimism, hoping for peace and safety for their families back home.
Sudanese Families Displaced
Sawsan Abdelrahman, a Sudanese expat, shared how her family fled Khartoum during the 2023 conflict. “They stole everything—our memories, our belongings. Our homes are empty now,” she said. Some Sudanese families have found refuge in neighboring countries, while others remain displaced within Sudan.
Ehab Galal, another Sudanese expat, said his family has been forced to leave their ancestral home. “Despite the hardships, we’ve grown closer as a community,” he said, praising their determination to rebuild.
Palestinians Living in Fear
For ZB, a Sharjah-based Palestinian expat with family in Gaza and the West Bank, staying in touch is difficult due to limited internet access. “I call my family once or twice a week, always worrying about their safety,” she said.
Tala SH, a dietician in Dubai, shared similar challenges. Her family in Qalqilya faces daily risks working on their farms. “Even a simple message on WhatsApp can feel unsafe,” she explained.
Ukrainian Struggles Continue
Lena Feskova, a Ukrainian resident in Dubai, described the ongoing difficulties her family faces amid the war. Power cuts, air raid sirens, and freezing winters are constant challenges. Despite this, she finds moments of hope. “War teaches you to appreciate small things, like snow or charging your phone,” she said.
