Breaking away from daily responsibilities, women in the UAE and Gulf countries are finding respite through a unique initiative by Dubai-based expat Asma Sarwar. Her venture, Woodpeckers Tours and Travels, organises women-only trips, offering homemakers and professionals a chance to relax, recharge, and reconnect with themselves.

A Personal Journey

Coming from a family involved in the tourism business, Asma was inspired to create this initiative after experiencing the emotional toll of the pandemic and the challenges of motherhood.

“I realised that many women juggle responsibilities and often neglect themselves. I wanted to create a space where women could take a break and pamper themselves,” she said.

The idea quickly gained momentum, starting with small meet-ups, evolving into full-fledged tours. The first trip, with 21 women traveling to Azerbaijan, was a resounding success.

Safety First

To ensure a secure experience, all travel partners, including tour guides and bus operators, are women. Asma personally conducts safety checks for every trip.

“We prioritise security and comfort. Having local women partners in other countries helps create a safe and enjoyable experience,” Asma explained.

Growing Popularity

The initiative has attracted women from across the Gulf, including Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and Bahrain. Recently, a group of 35 women traveled to Kyrgyzstan under the supervision of Asma’s collaborator, Arshiya Akhtar Ali, a fashion designer who shares Asma’s passion for empowering women.

“These trips are about more than just travel. They’re about meeting new people, bonding, and making lifelong memories,” said Arshiya.

Upcoming Adventures

Next on the itinerary is an overnight camping trip in Musandam, with plans for more women-friendly tours in the future.

Participants describe these experiences as transformative. “It was like hitting a reset button. I returned feeling lighter, happier, and ready to take on life,” said Amina, who joined the Azerbaijan trip.

With the support of her family and travel industry contacts, Asma is creating a safe and supportive community for women to explore the world, prioritise themselves, and embrace new adventures.
