In a groundbreaking move towards smart and sustainable transportation, Uber has partnered with WeRide to launch driverless rides in designated areas of Abu Dhabi. This new service, available initially in select locations, promises to provide passengers with a futuristic and safe travel experience.
Where Can You Ride?
The driverless Uber service will first be available in specific areas of Abu Dhabi, including:
- Saadiyat Island
- Yas Island
- Routes to and from Zayed International Airport
These areas have been chosen to ensure a smooth introduction, with future plans to expand to more regions within Abu Dhabi by 2025.
How to Book a Driverless Uber
To increase your chances of being matched with a WeRide autonomous vehicle, Uber users can update their settings within the app:
- Open the Uber app.
- Go to Ride Preferences in the app settings.
- Opt-in to increase the likelihood of being paired with a driverless vehicle when booking either UberX or Uber Comfort services.
Safety First
During the initial phase of the service launch, a safety operator will be present in each vehicle to ensure passenger safety and the secure operation of the vehicle. This phase sets the stage for a fully commercial launch, which is expected to occur later in 2025.
Vision for the Future
This initiative is part of Abu Dhabi’s broader efforts to revolutionize its transportation sector. The Smart and Autonomous Systems Council (SASC), along with Tawasul Transport and the Integrated Transport Centre (Abu Dhabi Mobility), is leading the project.
Dr. Abdulla Al Ghafli, Acting Director-General of the Integrated Transport Centre, emphasized that this service is a key step towards enhancing transportation through advanced technologies. “Using smart transport services like autonomous vehicles will not only offer a unique and safe experience for passengers but will also accelerate the shift towards more sustainable transportation solutions in Abu Dhabi,” he said.
This ambitious project is set to significantly improve the quality of life for Abu Dhabi residents, with a focus on sustainability and cutting-edge technology. The future of urban mobility in the UAE looks promising with driverless vehicles becoming an integral part of the city’s infrastructure.
