Abu Dhabi : UAE authorities successfully prevented over 50 suicide cases in 2024 using an artificial intelligence-driven Crime Map, a top official revealed. The advanced technology, which helps predict and prevent crimes, has also been instrumental in stopping murder, drug trafficking, and fraud. Dr. Mohamed Al Kuwaiti, head of the Cybersecurity Department, highlighted the success of the initiative during the AI Everything conference in Abu Dhabi on Tuesday.
How Crime Map Works
The Crime Map is a joint effort between the UAE Public Prosecution and the Cybersecurity Council. Using AI algorithms, it analyzes past crimes and global trends to predict potential threats and generate real-time alerts for authorities.
“With algorithms based on the history of crimes and global trends, [the map] predicts crimes and gives us notifications and reports,” said Salem Ali Juma Al Zaabi, head of Emergency, Crisis, and Disaster Prosecution at UAE Public Prosecution.
Authorities use advanced surveillance systems, including AI-driven cameras, to detect potential threats. If a crime indicator is detected, officials secure court orders or subpoenas to take necessary action before an incident occurs.
Challenges in Crime Prevention
Al Zaabi acknowledged that criminals constantly adapt, making it crucial for authorities to stay ahead.
“We have to collaborate internally and internationally to predict crimes and be ready for new forms of criminal activity,” he said.
Despite the extensive use of AI, privacy and data security remain a priority.
“It is our number one priority,” Dr. Al Kuwaiti emphasized. “We only analyze data within a clear, specific, and governed framework to ensure security and ethical use.”
Cybersecurity Threats in the UAE
Beyond crime prevention, the UAE also faces significant cybersecurity threats, with over 200,000 cyberattacks daily.
Dr. Al Kuwaiti revealed that the Next Generation Security Operations Centre—an AI-driven system—helps automatically block over 90% of cyber threats.
“These attacks follow patterns and behaviors that AI can detect early, allowing us to respond before damage occurs,” he explained.
The UAE’s proactive approach to AI-driven law enforcement continues to enhance security and set new standards for crime prevention worldwide.
