The Dubai Health Authority (DHA) has unveiled plans to use artificial intelligence (AI) and self-help applications to combat mental health issues among UAE’s female students, with a focus on depression and eating disorders. Figures show that 25% of female students in the UAE are at high risk of developing these conditions, prompting innovative solutions to tackle the growing challenge.
Leveraging AI for Mental Health
Speaking at Arab Health 2025, held at the Dubai World Trade Centre, DHA officials highlighted how AI-enabled tools will help screen and address mental health concerns. Dr. Hend Alawadhi, head of health promotion and education, emphasized the need to reduce stigma around mental health:
“We want to make it normal to talk about mental health. Increasing awareness is the first step to showing the importance of mental well-being,” she said.
The DHA also plans to launch a social media campaign to encourage open conversations about mental health, leveraging the platform to provide accurate information and resources.
Key Challenges Identified
According to DHA data:
- Women and teens are particularly vulnerable to mental health challenges, with postpartum depression being a significant concern among women.
- 35.9% of young people report feelings of sadness and hopelessness due to bullying and peer pressure.
- People of determination are five times more likely to experience mental health issues than those without disabilities.
- Diabetes patients are three times more likely to suffer from depression compared to individuals without the condition.
These statistics highlight the need for targeted interventions to address specific vulnerabilities across different demographic groups.
Strategic Initiatives by DHA
To address these challenges, DHA has announced several measures:
- Mental Health First Aid Training: A new program aimed at empowering individuals to provide immediate support in mental health crises.
- Integrated Governance Model: Establishing a comprehensive mental health governance system with a dedicated committee to oversee progress.
- Value-Based Care System: Developing an all-encompassing approach to mental healthcare that prioritizes outcomes and patient well-being.
- Scope for Psychiatrists: Introducing standardized practices for psychiatrists to ensure quality mental healthcare across Dubai.
Positioning UAE as a Leader in Mental Well-Being
In 2024, the UAE ranked 22nd in the Gallup World Well-Being Index, a global measure of mental well-being. The DHA aims to propel Dubai into the top 10 cities globally for mental well-being by introducing innovative strategies and reducing barriers to mental healthcare access.
A Vision for a Healthier Future
The initiatives unveiled by the DHA underscore its commitment to improving mental health outcomes for all residents. By integrating AI, promoting awareness, and establishing robust mental health systems, Dubai is paving the way to becoming a global leader in mental well-being, fostering a healthier and more resilient community.
