In 2015, Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice-President and Prime Minister of the UAE, and Ruler of Dubai, launched the Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Global Initiatives (MBRGI). The foundation's primary goal was to address the immense challenges facing the Arab region, including poverty, illiteracy, and a lack of healthcare infrastructure. Sheikh Mohammed pledged not to "turn his back on the region," emphasizing the importance of providing support and hope, especially for the youth.
MBRGI was established with an initial operating budget of Dh1 billion, focusing on meeting basic human needs in over 116 countries, though its efforts concentrated largely on the Arab world. The organization aims to fight poverty, disseminate knowledge, empower communities, and promote innovation. One of its key targets is to educate 20 million children and treat 30 million people suffering from blindness by 2025.
Sheikh Mohammed’s philanthropic approach goes beyond immediate humanitarian aid. His focus is on human development, fostering future Arab leaders who can contribute to long-term stability and prosperity. MBRGI has launched various programs, including the “1 Billion Meals” campaign, providing food aid to 50 countries.
The foundation's most recent initiative, the “Mother’s Endowment,” seeks to raise a Dh1 billion fund to support education globally. Through these initiatives, Sheikh Mohammed reiterates that the UAE’s wealth is best used for the service of humanity. The foundation has become a beacon of hope for millions, working to create vibrant societies and a better future for the region.
