Sharjah Police have launched a chilling exhibition aimed at raising awareness about the dangers of drug addiction, offering a stark, ultra-realistic depiction of the consequences of substance abuse. The display, part of the ‘My Family is My Biggest Wealth 2024’ exhibition at Zahia City Centre, presents a disturbing scene: a teenage figure lies unconscious on a grimy floor, surrounded by narcotics and discarded tools such as a hashish pipe, syringes, and crumpled wrappers. The setting is a grim backdrop of dirt and leftover food containers, designed to evoke a sense of despair and urgency.
This powerful exhibit, which runs until November 21, includes interactive content to engage visitors and foster discussions about drug abuse, highlighting the impact of various narcotics such as crystal meth, marijuana, and synthetic cannabis (spice). The exhibition's goal is to educate the public, particularly parents, on the signs of addiction and the substances their children might encounter.
A Sharjah Police spokesperson emphasized that the exhibition is aimed at raising awareness among families to prevent youth from falling into the trap of drug abuse. "We want parents to be aware of the signs of addiction and the types of drugs affecting the community," he stated, underscoring the importance of early education and vigilance.
The exhibition also educates the public about UAE's drug laws, particularly Articles 89 and 64. Article 89 assures that individuals who voluntarily come forward or seek help for addiction, either for themselves or a family member, will not face criminal charges. This initiative aims to reduce the stigma surrounding addiction and encourage people to seek help without fear of legal consequences.
Article 64, which addresses drug-related offenses, is displayed through a scenario illustrating the consequences of being involved in drug transactions, often due to peer pressure or lack of knowledge.
In addition to the somber displays, the Sharjah Police have organized a sports activity to provide a positive alternative for youth, featuring a blank challenge that encourages physical activity and helps keep children engaged and away from drugs. The event has been met with strong community support, with a notable turnout and impressive participation, including a 16-year-old completing an hour of intense activity, demonstrating the initiative’s success.
This comprehensive approach to addressing drug addiction in Sharjah emphasizes both awareness and community engagement as key factors in combating substance abuse and supporting those affected by addiction.
