Dubai – The Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has initiated the planning process for the Dubai Metro Gold Line, a new addition to the city's expanding public transportation network. The project is expected to enhance connectivity between older districts and emerging residential and commercial developments while alleviating congestion on the existing Red Line.
Route and Impact
The planned Gold Line will commence at Al Ghubaiba in Bur Dubai and traverse through key locations such as Business Bay, Meydan, Global Village, and Dubailand. This strategic route will facilitate smoother travel across the city, particularly between historic areas and new urban centers.
According to a report by Middle East Business Intelligence (MEED), the procurement process has officially begun, marking a significant milestone in Dubai’s efforts to expand its metro network.
Consultancy Tender Process
The RTA has already issued a Request for Proposals (RFP) to invite global firms to submit bids for the lead consultancy role. This consultancy contract will encompass various phases, including:
-
Concept design
-
Preliminary design
-
Preparation of tender documents
-
Construction supervision (optional stage)
-
Post-construction services during the defects liability period
The RFP is set to close in May 2025, with prominent international firms, such as AECOM (US), AtkinsRéalis (Canada), Jacobs (US), Mott MacDonald (UK), Parsons Corporation (US), and SYSTRA (France), expected to compete for the project.
Dubai Metro Expansion: Blue Line in the Works
The announcement of the Gold Line follows Dubai’s recent launch of the Metro Blue Line project in December 2024. The Dhs20.5 billion Blue Line, spanning 30 kilometers with 14 stations, aims to improve accessibility between residential and commercial hubs, including Dubai Creek Harbour, Festival City, Mirdif, and Dubai Silicon Oasis.
A standout feature of the Blue Line is a signature station at Dubai Creek Harbour, designed by the renowned architectural firm Skidmore, Owings & Merrill (SOM). This station is expected to accommodate 160,000 passengers daily by 2040.
Additionally, the Blue Line will introduce Dubai Metro’s first-ever crossing over Dubai Creek via a 1,300-meter bridge, adding both functional and aesthetic value to the city's transportation network.
Future Outlook
With the introduction of the Gold Line, Dubai continues its commitment to developing a world-class, sustainable transit system. The metro expansion aligns with the city's long-term urban mobility strategy, aiming to provide seamless and efficient public transportation solutions for residents and visitors alike.
The RTA’s proactive approach in launching new metro lines underscores Dubai’s vision for enhanced connectivity, reduced traffic congestion, and a more sustainable future.
