Dubai: India’s Champions Trophy-winning captain Rohit Sharma has addressed speculation regarding his future in One Day Internationals (ODIs) following the team’s triumphant campaign. At 38 years old, questions have been raised about whether he will continue playing until the 2027 ICC ODI World Cup.
Speaking after India’s emphatic four-wicket victory against New Zealand in the Champions Trophy final, Rohit confirmed that he has no immediate plans to retire but remains undecided about the next World Cup.
"I Am Not Retiring from This Format"
Dismissing rumors about an impending ODI retirement, Rohit stated:
"I am not going to retire from this format. Just to make sure no rumors are spread moving forward. Koi future plan hai nahi, jo chal raha hai chalega (there is no future plan, whatever is going on will continue as it is).”
The Indian skipper emphasized the hunger within the squad, particularly among the senior players, which has contributed to their sustained success.
"There is a lot of hunger even in guys who have played a lot of cricket, and it rubs off on the younger players. We have five to six players who are real stalwarts. It makes the job easier for all of us."
However, when asked specifically about his participation in the 2027 ODI World Cup, Rohit remained non-committal.
"Right now, I am taking things as they come. It wouldn’t be fair for me to think too far ahead. At this moment, my focus is on playing well and maintaining the right mindset. I don’t want to draw any lines and say whether I will or won’t play in the 2027 World Cup."
A Historic Champions Trophy Victory
India’s unbeaten campaign in the 2025 ICC Champions Trophy was a testament to their resilience. The team overcame several challenges, including losing all five tosses, yet emerged victorious without a single defeat.
"Winning a tournament without a single loss is a massive achievement, and it gives me immense satisfaction. Until we lifted the trophy, no one really thought about it. But after the victory, it hit us—we had gone through the entire tournament unbeaten. That realization made it even more special," Rohit said on Jio Hotstar.
The Indian captain attributed the team’s success to unity and clarity in roles.
"We have an incredibly solid team, and it’s a joy to play alongside such committed individuals. Everyone knows their role and responsibilities—what needs to be done and what must be avoided. Of course, emotions run high on the field. Sometimes, I get a bit carried away, but it’s all in the spirit of the game. The main goal is to win, and we are ready to do whatever it takes."
Preparation and Tactical Adjustments Key to Success
Rohit credited India’s meticulous preparation for their ability to adapt despite missing key players, including Jasprit Bumrah.
"After the Australia tour, we had about 20-25 days before the tournament. We closely monitored the ILT20 matches to study the pitches and playing conditions. We analyzed what kind of bowlers were needed for those surfaces and shaped our squad accordingly."
Shifting the Mindset After Past ICC Setbacks
Reflecting on India’s struggles in past ICC tournaments, Rohit acknowledged that the team had previously faltered in critical moments.
"It was always unfortunate that we came so close to winning major tournaments but couldn’t get over the line. In the 2015 World Cup semi-final against Australia, we made mistakes we hadn't made in previous matches. The same thing happened in 2016, 2017, and even the 2023 World Cup final."
A key turning point, he revealed, was the decision to prioritize collective success over individual milestones.
"Before the 2023 World Cup, we had serious discussions about shifting our mindset. The focus was no longer on individual milestones—scoring a hundred or taking five wickets—because, in the end, if the team doesn’t win, those achievements don’t matter. I learned this the hard way in 2019. I scored five centuries, but what did it mean when we didn’t win the trophy?"
How India Wants to Be Perceived by Opponents
When asked how he wants rival teams to view India moving forward, Rohit emphasized the team’s never-say-die attitude.
"I don’t want to dictate how other teams should see us. The only thing I want is for them never to take us lightly. Even if we are five wickets down, we have the ability to fight back and turn the game around. Until the last ball of the match is bowled, our opponents should always feel the pressure of playing against us."
What Lies Ahead?
With no definitive answer on his participation in the 2027 World Cup, Rohit Sharma remains focused on short-term goals. As India looks to build on its Champions Trophy success, the captain’s experience and leadership will be crucial in shaping the team’s journey in upcoming international assignments.
For now, fans can rest assured that Rohit Sharma is not stepping away from ODIs anytime soon, keeping hopes alive for another title run under his leadership.
