Early Beginnings: A Spark of Entrepreneurship 

Tell us about your early life, education, and what led you to start your business

My entrepreneurial journey began when I was just ten years old. My first venture was as the official neighbourhood snow shoveler. I secured agreements with local neighbours, offering to shovel their driveways for $10.00 per driveway every time it snowed. It was official: I was an entrepreneur. When the snow melted, I transitioned to offering grass-cutting and lawn maintenance services, and the neighbours were happy to support me. 

As a teenager, I discovered my passion for playing the guitar. I saved up for my first guitar and started taking lessons. Outside school and social activities, I practiced diligently and eventually played in local amateur bands. Soon, a few of my friends' younger siblings showed interest in learning guitar, and their parents hired me to teach the basics. Before long, I taught five students at our local junior high school and earned money doing something I loved. 

Toward the end of junior high, I became captivated by martial arts after watching a Bruce Lee movie. A friend practicing Judo convinced me to try a few classes at his dojo. I was mesmerized by how smaller individuals could toss taller, heavier opponents. While still engrossed in guitar playing, I balanced my schedule to attend Judo classes three times a week. 

Transitioning to senior high school brought new challenges and opportunities. I continued learning and teaching guitar and practicing Judo. At the same time, I joined the high school wrestling team, further fueling my passion for physical fitness and discipline. 

After graduating high school, I attended York University in Toronto, earning a B.A. in Sociology with a minor in Physical Education. Post-graduation, I explored various sales roles before landing a position with the Yellow Pages, selling print and digital advertising in London, Ontario. 

One of my Yellow Pages clients was a website designer, and his work intrigued me. After five years, I decided it was time for a change. In 2005, I took a package from the Yellow Pages and purchased a 50% share in my website designer client’s business, moving back to Toronto to establish a new company division. 

As I began selling website design solutions in Toronto, I noticed a recurring problem—clients often didn’t have content for their websites. I taught myself how to write website content and create SEO copy to address this. This skill allowed me to help clients launch their websites while ensuring I got paid. Along the way, I fell in love with SEO copywriting and assisting businesses to rank on Google. This passion led me to establish Writing Web Words Inc. in 2008.
