Dubai: The UAE government is ensuring that major retailers comply with the new pricing policy for nine essential consumer goods, preventing unjustified price increases during Ramadan, said Abdullah bin Touq Al Marri, UAE’s Minister of Economy.
Al Marri conducted inspection tours of major supermarkets, including Union Coop, Lulu, and five other retail outlets, to confirm that the prices of key staple goods—cooking oil, eggs, dairy products, rice, sugar, poultry, legumes, bread, and wheat—are displayed clearly and remain within regulatory limits.
Strict Pricing Policy to Protect Consumers
During his visits, the minister emphasized that retailers must follow the updated pricing guidelines set by the Ministry of Economy.
"We are ensuring that sales outlets adhere to the new pricing policy, preventing unjustified price hikes and ensuring that product prices are displayed clearly and legibly to consumers," Al Marri stated.
The Ministry of Economy announced in December 2024 that retailers cannot raise prices of the nine basic consumer goods without prior approval. Additionally, there must be a minimum gap of six months between consecutive price increases starting from 2025.
Ramadan's Impact on Consumer Spending
With Ramadan expected to begin on March 1, 2025, consumer spending is projected to rise significantly as families host large gatherings, increasing the demand for essential food items. Retailers typically report a double-digit increase in sales of basic consumer products during the holy month.
Al Marri reiterated that his market inspections are aimed at:
- Ensuring fair pricing practices
- Enhancing market oversight
- Protecting consumer rights
- Maintaining quality standards for citizens and residents
Public Participation in Price Monitoring
During the visits, Al Marri engaged with shoppers to understand their views on price stability and gather feedback on retail pricing.
He also emphasized the importance of cooperation between the Ministry, economic development departments, and other government agencies to prevent price manipulation.
"Consumers play a vital role in price monitoring by reporting any unfair pricing practices. We encourage them to interact with regulatory authorities and use official channels to submit complaints or flag violations," the ministry stated.
With strict regulations in place, the UAE government is committed to protecting consumer interests and ensuring price stability during Ramadan.
