Riyadh: Saudi Arabia has officially declared Saturday, March 1, as the first day of Ramadan 2025, following the sighting of the crescent moon on Friday evening, February 28.
Lunar Calendar Determines Ramadan’s Start
The Islamic calendar follows a lunar system, meaning each month lasts either 29 or 30 days, depending on the visibility of the new moon.
- The Supreme Court of Saudi Arabia had earlier called upon Muslims to look for the crescent on Shaban 29 (Friday).
- Following confirmed sightings, Ramadan will officially commence on March 1.
Key Religious Observances During Ramadan
With the arrival of Ramadan, Muslims around the world begin a month of fasting, prayer, and reflection.
- Fasting from dawn to sunset: Muslims abstain from food, drink, and other physical needs during daylight hours.
- Taraweeh prayers: Special nightly prayers will begin on the first night of Ramadan.
- Umrah pilgrimage: Many Muslims prefer to perform Umrah during Ramadan, as it holds greater spiritual rewards.
Celebrating the Holy Month
Ramadan is the ninth month of the Islamic calendar and holds immense significance. Each day’s fast is broken with a prayer and iftar meal, often shared with family and community members.
As the month begins, Muslims worldwide will engage in worship, charity, and acts of kindness, strengthening their faith and connection to God.
