Brisbane, After an illustrious career spanning more than a decade, Indian cricket legend R Ashwin has announced his retirement from international cricket. The spinner made the declaration following the third Test against Australia in Brisbane, marking the end of a monumental chapter in Indian cricket history.
Ashwin played 106 Test matches, claiming 537 wickets and securing his position as India’s second-highest wicket-taker in the format. His decision to step down was confirmed during a joint press conference with Indian captain Rohit Sharma. In an emotional statement, Ashwin said, “Today will be the last day for me as an India cricketer.”
A Career of Milestones
Ashwin’s achievements include being a crucial part of India’s ICC Cricket World Cup win in 2011 and the Champions Trophy victory in 2013. His all-round contributions were pivotal in India’s success across all formats. In white-ball cricket, he played 113 ODIs and took 156 wickets, while his T20I record stands at 72 wickets in 65 matches.
