A remarkable collection of over 3,000 handwoven Persian carpets, valued at approximately Dh1.84 billion ($500 million), will soon be displayed in Ras Al Khaimah. These carpets, some dating back to the 17th century, embody centuries of Persian culture and craftsmanship. Each intricate knot and design element tells a story, making these carpets a living tribute to heritage and artistry.
Dr. Afshin Ghanbarinia, vice-chairman of Ghanbarinia Heritage Carpets, described the collection as "woven histories." He noted that many motifs, such as the Shahabasi flower and the central medallion, are inspired by symbols from the Safavid dynasty (1501-1736) and represent themes of rebirth, life balance, and the age-old struggle between good and evil. “These aren’t just decorative pieces. They’re pieces of history that speak to the soul,” he emphasized.
Following a recent exhibition at the Waldorf Astoria Hotel, Ghanbarinia Carpets—a brand founded in 1841—is now opening its first branch in Ras Al Khaimah. The brand’s collection includes historical masterpieces and modern designs, crafted from natural fibers and dyed with plant-based colors, aligning with the UAE's commitment to cultural preservation and sustainable practices.
Walter Hahn, a collector with over 40 years of experience, praised the skill and dedication that go into each carpet. One of the carpets from the late 1800s features a million knots per square meter, showcasing extraordinary detail. Hahn described these carpets as “powerful works of art with cultural and spiritual meanings in every line and motif.”
The Ras Al Khaimah branch will offer visitors a chance to explore the intricate beauty of Persian carpets and appreciate the cultural heritage they represent.
