Recent remarks by US President Donald Trump, proposing that Egypt and Jordan take in Palestinian refugees from Gaza, have triggered widespread backlash among Palestinians, particularly those living in the UAE. Many consider the suggestion a direct threat to Palestinian rights and identity, as well as an attempt to sever ties with their homeland.
Diaspora Outrage
Amal, a marketing professional in Dubai and granddaughter of Palestinians displaced during the Nakba, strongly criticized the proposal. “This is yet another attempt to erase our connection to our land. For decades, Palestinians have endured displacement and oppression. Proposing further relocation only deepens the injustice,” she said, asserting that Palestinians have a right to live in their homeland, not as refugees dispersed across the region.
The remarks, made on January 25, have been firmly rejected by Palestinian authorities, as well as by Jordan and Egypt. Trump suggested these nations could “clean out” Gaza by accepting refugees, a comment that many Palestinians see as undermining their sovereignty and struggle for justice.
Concerns About Identity and Sovereignty
Tarek, an engineer in Abu Dhabi, highlighted the implications for Palestinian independence. “Relocating refugees to other countries strips us of our right to self-determination. This isn’t about space or resources—it’s about preserving our identity and ensuring our future in our homeland,” he said, calling the proposal a deliberate attempt to weaken the Palestinian cause.
Failure of International Responsibility
Layla, a teacher in Sharjah, condemned the global community for not addressing the root causes of the crisis. “Instead of holding Israel accountable for its occupation, they propose temporary fixes that perpetuate the injustice. It’s like applying a band-aid to a deep wound,” she said, emphasizing the need for genuine solutions rather than displacement schemes.
Trump’s proposal comes during a fragile ceasefire between Israel and Hamas, following over a year of intense conflict in Gaza that left more than 47,000 Palestinians dead.
Calls for Unity and Resistance
The Palestinian diaspora in the UAE is urging Arab nations to stand united against Trump’s proposal and advocate for lasting solutions that protect Palestinian sovereignty.
Mahmoud, a businessman in Dubai, called for solidarity across the Arab world. “We need to reject any plans that compromise our identity or rights. Palestinians must live in dignity, within our rightful homeland—not as pawns in political schemes,” he said, emphasizing the importance of collective action to oppose such proposals.
This controversial proposal has reignited discussions about the necessity of addressing displacement’s root causes and upholding the principles of justice, sovereignty, and self-determination for Palestinians. It underscores the ongoing struggle for recognition and a resolution that prioritizes dignity and homeland over forced relocation.
