San Francisco, CA – Poornima Rao, the mother of whistleblower and ex-OpenAI employee Suchir Balaji, has accused the AI giant of failing to acknowledge her late son's contributions to its flagship product, ChatGPT. Mr. Balaji, who had publicly criticized OpenAI’s ethical practices before his death in November 2024, was initially reported to have died by suicide. However, his family alleges foul play and is demanding an FBI investigation.
Family Raises Concerns Over OpenAI's Silence
Speaking to influencer Mario Nawfal on X, Ms. Rao claimed her son made significant contributions to fine-tuning ChatGPT, improving its speed and efficiency.
"He did something remarkable for ChatGPT, but his work was never recognized during his lifetime," she said. "Even now, OpenAI hasn’t acknowledged his efforts. It’s deeply disappointing."
Mr. Balaji worked at OpenAI for nearly four years before resigning in August 2023. His departure was reportedly fueled by dissatisfaction with the company's transition to a for-profit model.
Disputed Death Circumstances
Ms. Rao and her husband, Balaji Ramamurthy, have challenged the initial ruling of suicide, citing findings from a second autopsy they commissioned. They allege the autopsy revealed:
- A head injury suggesting a struggle.
- Ransacking of Mr. Balaji's apartment.
- Bloodstains in the bathroom indicative of foul play.
"We are convinced this is a case of cold-blooded murder being disguised as a suicide," Ms. Rao said, urging the FBI to take over the investigation. The San Francisco Police Department has since reopened the case as an active investigation but has not provided further details.
Ethical Concerns Raised by Balaji
Before his death, Mr. Balaji was outspoken about ethical lapses he observed at OpenAI. In an interview with The New York Times, he accused the company of training its AI models on copyrighted material scraped from the internet without permission. He detailed these concerns in his personal blog, warning that such practices undermined the sustainability of the internet ecosystem.
OpenAI has denied the allegations, asserting that its data usage complies with US copyright law under the "fair use" doctrine.
Elon Musk Amplifies Family’s Allegations
Elon Musk, a co-founder of OpenAI and now one of its most vocal critics, has amplified the family’s concerns. Sharing Ms. Rao's interview on X, Musk commented,
"This doesn’t seem like a suicide."
Musk, who distanced himself from OpenAI in 2018, has previously criticized the company’s commercial pivot and ethical transparency.
A Growing Debate on AI Ethics
The controversy surrounding Mr. Balaji's death and his allegations against OpenAI has reignited debates on AI ethics, transparency, and corporate accountability. While OpenAI has not officially commented on the family's allegations, the unfolding investigation continues to attract global attention.
