Prime Minister Narendra Modi met Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni on the sidelines of the 19th G20 Summit in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Their discussions emphasized enhancing cooperation in defence, security, trade, and technology, further cementing the growing partnership between India and Italy.

Strengthening Ties for a Better Planet

Sharing insights from the meeting on social media platform X, PM Modi stated, “India-Italy friendship can greatly contribute to a better planet.” The leaders also explored avenues for collaboration in cultural and educational exchanges, aiming to deepen bilateral relations across diverse sectors.

Broader Diplomatic Engagements

In addition to meeting Giorgia Meloni, PM Modi engaged in bilateral talks with other global leaders, including UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer, French President Emmanuel Macron, and Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Store.

India-UK Partnership: During his meeting with PM Starmer, PM Modi welcomed the relaunch of Free Trade Agreement (FTA) talks slated for the new year. Both leaders committed to bolstering cooperation in technology, green energy, climate change, and security. PM Starmer emphasized that a trade deal with India would support jobs and economic growth in the UK.

India-France Strategic Partnership: In discussions with French President Emmanuel Macron, PM Modi highlighted joint efforts in space, energy, and artificial intelligence. The two leaders reiterated their commitment to strengthening people-to-people ties and advancing regional cooperation in the Indo-Pacific. PM Modi also lauded France’s successful hosting of the Olympics and Paralympics earlier this year.

India’s Growing Global Role

The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) described the meetings as opportunities to inject fresh momentum into India’s strategic partnerships. PM Modi’s interactions at the G20 Summit reflect India’s expanding influence in global diplomacy, with a focus on economic growth, technological advancement, and international cooperation.

As India continues to deepen its global engagement, these discussions reaffirm the nation’s commitment to fostering meaningful partnerships that contribute to global peace, prosperity, and progress.
