Los Angeles – A new wildfire erupted north of Los Angeles on Wednesday, rapidly consuming over 8,000 acres near Castaic Lake. The fire, fueled by strong Santa Ana winds, prompted the evacuation of 31,000 residents as authorities issued emergency alerts.
The Hughes Fire, which started near the lake, is spreading quickly, threatening surrounding communities. Firefighters are battling the blaze from the air and on the ground, but the situation remains precarious with winds pushing the fire dangerously close to residential areas.
Local authorities have also evacuated the Pitchess Detention Center in Castaic, relocating around 500 inmates. Meanwhile, the I5 freeway is closed in areas impacted by the fire.
California firefighters are struggling with dry conditions, which are worsening the fire’s spread. Experts warn the fire could expand into Ventura County as the situation continues to evolve.
With no significant rainfall in Southern California for months, the region remains highly vulnerable to wildfires, and the threat remains high. Authorities are urging residents to evacuate immediately to ensure their safety.
