Lebanese expatriates in the UAE have expressed optimism about the future of their homeland following the election of Joseph Aoun as Lebanon's new president, ending a prolonged leadership vacuum. Many expats, who left Lebanon due to its ongoing economic and security challenges, are now hopeful that Aoun's leadership will bring stability and opportunities for return.
Emilio Abu Habib, a hairstylist in Abu Dhabi, shared his joy about the election and expressed a collective sense of relief among his colleagues. He emphasized the importance of restoring Lebanon’s stability and reigniting the tourism and investment sectors, so Lebanese expats and Gulf visitors could return. Having left Lebanon 18 years ago for economic reasons, Emilio dreams of returning to a secure and prosperous homeland.
Nicola Khashab, a colleague of Emilio, echoed similar feelings of homesickness and longing to return to Lebanon under improved conditions. Despite moving to the UAE just a year ago, he yearns for the stability that would allow him to be with his loved ones again.
While some expats are cautiously optimistic, others, like dentistry student Wafaa Al Eissawi, expressed hope for a stable Lebanon under Aoun’s leadership but remain cautious due to past political instability. Wafaa, who plans to return to Lebanon after completing her studies, acknowledged the uncertainty surrounding security but is hopeful for a better future under the new president.
Many are focused on rebuilding Lebanon, with an emphasis on ensuring the Lebanese army restores order and prevents further civil unrest. Expats are eager for a stable environment where they can reunite with their families and help revive Lebanon’s former glory.
