LOS ANGELES – A United Airlines flight from Los Angeles to Shanghai was forced to make an unexpected U-turn mid-journey after one of the pilots realized they had forgotten their passport, causing significant delays for passengers.
Flight UA198, a Boeing 787 carrying 270 passengers, was already over the Pacific Ocean on Saturday when it was rerouted back to the United States, according to flight tracking data. Instead of returning to Los Angeles, the aircraft diverted to San Francisco to address the issue.
Pilot’s Passport Mishap Delays Flight
United Airlines confirmed the incident in a statement, acknowledging that the detour was necessary due to the pilot’s missing travel document.
"The plane made a stop in San Francisco as the pilot did not have their passport onboard," the airline said. "We arranged for a new crew to take our customers to their destination that evening."
To accommodate the affected passengers, United provided meal vouchers and compensation, though the airline did not specify the exact nature of the compensation.
Arrival in Shanghai Delayed by Six Hours
Following the unscheduled stop in San Francisco, a replacement crew was brought in to continue the flight. The aircraft ultimately landed at Shanghai’s Pudong International Airport just after midnight, approximately six hours later than its originally scheduled arrival time.
Travel Disruptions Continue Worldwide
The incident occurred at a time when air travelers worldwide were already facing significant disruptions. On the same day, London’s Heathrow Airport, Europe’s busiest hub, was dealing with delays due to a major power outage, further complicating global air travel.
While such passport-related mishaps are rare among airline crew members, this incident underscores the importance of pre-flight checks for both pilots and passengers.
