India has reported 11 cases of the Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV), a respiratory virus that shares symptoms with COVID-19. Maharashtra, with three cases, is the latest addition to the list, which includes Bengaluru, Chennai, Kolkata, Gujarat, and Nagpur.
The virus is not new, as clarified by Union Health Minister JP Nadda, who stated, "HMPV is not a novel virus. There is no reason to panic, and the situation is under control." Special ICU wards have been established in hospitals to treat patients showing severe symptoms.
Dr. Randeep Guleria, former AIIMS Director, explained that while HMPV is usually mild, it can lead to complications like pneumonia in infants, the elderly, and those with comorbidities. He advised symptomatic treatment, including medication for fever, proper hydration, and good nutrition.
Precautionary measures include:
- Avoiding crowded places.
- Maintaining hygiene and wearing masks in public.
- Monitoring for symptoms like fever, cough, and breathing difficulties.
State governments, including those in Bihar and Uttar Pradesh, have issued guidelines urging calm and adherence to health protocols. Dedicated health teams are monitoring the situation closely, ensuring timely responses to emerging cases.
Stay informed and prioritize precautions to prevent the spread of HMPV. Health experts reiterate that following simple guidelines can minimize risks significantly.
