In the early 1960s, Hamad Saghran, then in his mid-20s, became one of Ras Al Khaimah’s pioneering mechanics. Tasked with repairing engines imported from the UK, Saghran played a crucial role in pumping water for local farms and households, making him an indispensable figure for the region’s water supply during a time when reliable access to water was challenging.
A Journey Rooted in Curiosity
Saghran’s fascination with mechanics began in his youth. He lacked formal engineering training, but his curiosity and hands-on approach set him apart. When he saw a local mechanic struggling to fix a boat’s steam engine, Saghran took a bold step: he crafted a makeshift gasket from plastic and successfully restarted the engine. This experience sparked his passion and set him on a lifelong path in mechanics.
As his reputation for engine repairs spread, Saghran took on even more responsibilities. By the time the UAE was formed in 1971, he joined the Ministry of Electricity and Water, overseeing water facilities across eastern regions like Ras Al Khaimah, Umm Al Quwain, Ajman, and Fujairah. After a few years, he decided to return to his roots as a mechanic, working from his workshop.
Honored by Rulers and Respected by Engineers
Saghran’s expertise did not go unnoticed. The ruler of Ras Al Khaimah requested his help with crucial engine repairs. His mechanical skills even impressed a British engineer who observed Saghran disassembling an entire machine. Curious about Saghran’s knowledge, the engineer asked how he had learned to work on such complex systems. Saghran’s response was simple: “I learned through experience and practice.” His approach emphasized the value of practical skills, acquired through years of dedication.
Legacy of Dedication
Today, at nearly 88, Saghran remains active. Surrounded by his family, including nine children and numerous grandchildren, he still spends time repairing machines in a small workshop at home. From kitchen appliances to water pumps, he continues his lifelong work, a testament to the legacy he built in Ras Al Khaimah.
Saghran’s journey is a powerful reminder of how determination, skill, and self-reliance helped shape his community, even before the advent of modern infrastructure.
