A tragic stampede in Guinea’s N’Zerekore on Sunday claimed the lives of over 100 people after violent clashes erupted during a football match. The violence was triggered by a referee's contested decision, which sparked outrage among fans.
The Incident
According to eyewitnesses, fans stormed the pitch following the controversial decision, leading to chaos. Viral videos show demonstrators damaging public property, with many trying to escape by climbing walls and jumping to safety.
“There are bodies lined up as far as the eye can see in the hospital. Others are lying on the floor in the hallways. The morgue is full,” a local doctor told AFP, speaking anonymously.
Escalation of Violence
The unrest spread beyond the stadium as demonstrators vandalized and set fire to the N’Zerekore police station. Witnesses reported widespread panic as security forces struggled to control the situation.
Political Context
The match was part of a tournament organized in honor of Guinea’s junta leader, Mamadi Doumbouya, who came to power in a 2021 coup. Such tournaments have gained prominence as Doumbouya seeks to solidify political alliances and possibly contest future presidential elections.
Government Response
Guinea’s Prime Minister, Bah Oury, condemned the violence and urged calm. “The government deplores the incidents... and is monitoring the situation to ensure hospital services are not hindered in providing first aid to the injured,” he posted on X (formerly Twitter).
This tragedy highlights the ongoing challenges in maintaining order during large public events in Guinea, as political and social tensions remain high.
