Abu Dhabi is set to become a global leader in the next generation of transportation with the launch of electric flying taxis, thanks to a new partnership between Archer Aviation and key UAE entities. The historic agreement was announced on Friday, December 6, 2024, marking a major step towards launching the first commercial electric Vertical Takeoff and Landing (eVTOL) flight in the first quarter of 2026.

Key Players in the Collaboration

Archer Aviation, a pioneer in the development of electric air taxis, will be the first manufacturer of vertical electric vehicles in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region. This partnership is a significant milestone for the region's aviation and smart mobility industries. It brings together several influential entities, including:

  • Archer Aviation (the manufacturer of the eVTOLs)
  • Abu Dhabi Investment Office (ADIO), which will coordinate efforts for a successful launch
  • Abu Dhabi Airports (AD Airports)
  • Falcon Aviation Services
  • Etihad Airways and Etihad Aviation Training
  • General Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA)
  • Global Air Navigation Services (GANS)
  • Integrated Transport Centre (Abu Dhabi Mobility)

What This Means for Abu Dhabi

The agreement formalizes collaboration between all stakeholders, with the goal of launching the first commercial flying taxi operations in Abu Dhabi by Q1 2026. The flying taxis, developed by Archer Aviation, will be part of a robust ecosystem designed to support the development and deployment of eVTOL technology in the UAE.

As part of the agreement, Archer Aviation will also set up local manufacturing capabilities for full eVTOL production in Abu Dhabi. This collaboration aims to foster innovation in smart transportation solutions, with a particular focus on sustainable, efficient, and advanced mobility technologies.

Statements from Key Figures

  • Badr Al-Olama, Director General of the Abu Dhabi Investment Office (ADIO), emphasized the role of Abu Dhabi’s aviation sector in accelerating the smart mobility revolution. He expressed excitement about the region’s leadership in advancing autonomous systems and electric aviation.

  • His Excellency Saif Mohammed Al Suwaidi, Director General of the General Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA), highlighted the importance of collaboration across the country’s aviation entities to ensure the safe introduction of eVTOLs into the UAE’s skies.

  • Etihad Airways CEO, Antonoaldo Neves, shared his enthusiasm for the project, foreseeing the potential for Etihad passengers to benefit from the new air taxi service, with the possibility of using the flying taxis to travel to and from Abu Dhabi International Airport.

  • Nikhil Goel, Chief Commercial Officer of Archer Aviation, expressed his belief that the UAE's forward-thinking approach makes it the ideal environment for the launch of Archer’s Midnight aircraft—the electric flying taxi model.

Preparations for Launch

The UAE’s General Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA) is working closely with Archer Aviation, including conducting workshops and flight tests to establish the necessary regulatory framework. This is crucial to ensure the safe certification of the Midnight aircraft and to pave the way for the commercial launch of the electric air taxis in 2026.

Looking Ahead

The development of electric flying taxis in Abu Dhabi represents a groundbreaking step towards transforming urban transportation and redefining how people travel. As the first city in the MENA region to introduce such services, Abu Dhabi is poised to become a global hub for innovation in electric air mobility, setting the stage for the widespread adoption of autonomous transportation solutions worldwide.
