Tesla CEO Elon Musk donated 268,000 shares of Tesla, valued at $108.2 million, to undisclosed charities just before the new year, as revealed in a regulatory filing with the SEC. This move follows Musk's pattern of significant year-end philanthropic contributions.
In 2022, Musk donated Tesla shares worth $1.95 billion, and in 2021, he contributed $5.74 billion to the Musk Foundation. Founded in 2001, the foundation supports initiatives in renewable energy, space exploration, pediatric research, STEM education, and safe AI development.
The filing did not disclose the recipient charities but noted that they currently have no plans to sell the shares. The donation aligns with Musk’s "year-end tax planning," a strategy he has employed in previous years.
Tesla’s stock, however, took a hit on January 2, 2025, falling 6.1% to $379.28 amid reports of Musk's donation and the company’s first annual sales drop in a decade. Tesla delivered 1.79 million vehicles in 2024, a 1.1% decline compared to the previous year, missing Wall Street projections. Analysts attribute the slowdown to increasing competition from Chinese automakers like BYD and a global demand dip.
Musk’s net worth remains robust at $408.3 billion, securing his spot as the world’s wealthiest person, according to Forbes. Despite Tesla's challenges, Musk’s donation highlights his continued commitment to philanthropic initiatives while navigating evolving market conditions.
