The Dubai World Cup is a world-renowned event known not only for its thrilling horse racing but also for its unparalleled style and glamour. While the prestigious race boasts a purse of $30.5 million, it is equally celebrated for its sartorial excellence, with fashionistas from around the globe flocking to Meydan Racecourse to showcase their finest attire. For Lebanese expat Joe Robert Moufarrej and his partner Johanna, attending Fashion Friday at the Dubai World Cup was an unexpected foray into a fashion competition. Encouraged by friends and the reception team, the couple participated in the Best-Dressed Couple contest—and emerged victorious. Joe, dressed in a sharp Ted Baker suit, and Johanna, in an elegant Sandro gown, were delighted by the win. “This is just how we normally dress,” said Joe, CEO of a property management app. “People often compliment our style, but I never imagined winning, especially on such a big stage.”
Fashion at the Dubai World Cup: A Celebration of Glamour
The Dubai World Cup is not just about racing—it’s a celebration of luxury, fashion, and glamour. The Meydan Grandstand transforms into a vibrant mosaic of colors, textures, and trends as attendees from all over the world express their sartorial creativity.
Sophie Ryan, head of Communications and Marketing at the Dubai Racing Club, noted that Fashion Friday, alongside the Style Stakes competition, has significantly enhanced the experience this year. “Horse racing and fashion are inherently intertwined,” she said, adding that events like the Dubai World Cup, along with Royal Ascot and the Kentucky Derby, have become synonymous with style and elegance.
The Blend of Modernity and Tradition
The Dubai World Cup is a fascinating blend of modern and traditional fashion influences. Women often embrace modest yet stylish silhouettes, with hemlines just above the knee and shoulders elegantly covered. Men typically stick to classic suits, elevating their looks with striking lapel pins or bold ties.
One of the most remarkable aspects of the Dubai World Cup’s fashion scene is how it marries Middle Eastern heritage with global trends. Abayas are adorned with modern embellishments, while kaftans are reimagined in bold, contemporary colors. Turbans are styled with flair, blending tradition with a modern twist.
Hats: The Ultimate Accessory
No ensemble at the Dubai World Cup is complete without the iconic headpiece. From wide-brimmed hats to intricately crafted fascinators, these creations are an essential statement of style. Many guests collaborate with renowned milliners to ensure their hats are unique, bold, and reflective of Dubai’s penchant for luxury.
The Style Stakes, one of the event’s most anticipated features, sees attendees competing for prestigious titles such as Best Dressed Lady, Best Dressed Man, Best Hat, and Best Dressed Couple. With Dh14,000 in prizes and an automatic entry to the grand finale in April, the competition is fierce.
Creative Flair in the Style Stakes
Swedish contestant Melissa Omanic turned heads with her eco-conscious creativity. Entering the Best Hat category, she wore a stunning headpiece repurposed from a flower decoration she had in her bathroom. "I wanted to think about the environment," she explained. "Why buy when I can make my own?"
Meanwhile, Cassie Kent, a New Zealander based in Abu Dhabi, won the Best Hat prize with a Jackie Kennedy-inspired pillbox hat. “I have to thank my milliner friend, Karen Hamilton, for this unique creation,” she shared. “I thought the other hats were absolutely phenomenal and never expected to win. But judge Vivien told me my hat stood out for being both different and stylish.”
The Best Dressed Lady award went to Saly Abdollah, while Isaac Carew earned the title of Best Dressed Man.
