As part of a major health initiative, the Dubai measles vaccination campaign has been launched to ensure mandatory MMR (Measles, Mumps, and Rubella) vaccines for primary students in schools and nurseries across the UAE. The campaign, led by Dubai Health Authority (DHA) in collaboration with schools, provides free MMR vaccinations on campus this month to safeguard public health.

Under the Dubai measles vaccination campaign, children aged one to seven are required to receive a single dose of the MMR vaccine, with exemptions granted only for those with documented medical contraindications. The Knowledge and Development Authority (KHDA) has emphasized that schools must encourage parents to follow the recommended two-dose MMR schedule, reinforcing the vaccine's importance in safeguarding child health and community well-being.

Special Training Under the Dubai Measles Vaccination Campaign

To support the Dubai measles vaccination campaign, DHA has conducted specialized training for school healthcare professionals to administer vaccines at designated Vaccine Qualified Clinics (VQC) within schools. School leaders are urging parents to register their children for the vaccinations, which are available at both school sites and DHA healthcare centers, for convenience.

Ms. Sangita Chima, Principal of Amity School Dubai, stated, “Our school has collaborated with DHA to implement the campaign effectively. In October, our medical staff attended DHA training sessions, equipping them with the skills needed for safe vaccine administration.” Aligned with World Health Organization (WHO) guidelines, the campaign promotes MMR vaccination as part of the standard childhood immunization schedule, urging parents to vaccinate their children for enhanced protection.

Consent and Parental Engagement in the Dubai Measles Vaccination Campaign

As part of the Dubai measles vaccination campaign, schools are actively engaging with parents to provide guidance and address any concerns. “We have shared DHA's parental guidance, ensuring thorough communication and support from our medical team,” added Ms. Chima. Schools are reporting strong parental support and receiving completed consent forms promptly.

Ms. Sheela Menon, Principal of Ambassador School Dubai, highlighted the campaign’s transparency, stating, “Notifications and consent forms were sent to parents of Pre-KG to Grade 1. For any parents opting out, we require a medical report explaining the exemption. With DHA’s support, we aim to address any queries and complete the vaccination campaign in November.”

Addressing Measles Cases in the UAE

While only a few cases of measles have been reported recently, medical experts stress the importance of the Dubai measles vaccination campaign. Dr. Monish Joseph Thomas, Pediatric Registrar at Saudi German Hospital Dubai, noted that measles symptoms include fever, runny nose, cough, and a distinctive rash. Although measles remains highly contagious, the UAE’s extensive vaccination coverage has been critical in preventing outbreaks.

Dr. Rain Sim, Pediatric Consultant at Canadian Specialist Hospital Dubai, provided further insight into measles progression, explaining that the rash typically starts on the face and neck before spreading. Treatment focuses on fever control and hydration, with severe complications being rare.

Importance of the Dubai Measles Vaccination Campaign in Achieving Herd Immunity

To ensure continued success in containing infectious diseases, health experts are advocating for high vaccination coverage through the Dubai measles vaccination campaign. Dr. Sherif Mohamed Mosaad Kamel, Consultant Pediatrician at Zulekha Hospital Dubai, stressed that maintaining immunity against measles is crucial. He noted, “The MMR vaccine is the most effective preventive method. The CDC recommends two doses: the first at 12–15 months and the second at 4–6 years, which supports herd immunity and helps prevent outbreaks.”

Healthcare professionals have raised concerns over reduced vaccine uptake due to misinformation and the Covid-19 pandemic's impact on immunization rates. Dr. Sim added, “Reduced vaccination rates and misinformation have contributed to a resurgence of preventable diseases, making campaigns like the Dubai measles vaccination campaign vital in maintaining community health.”

The Dubai measles vaccination campaign exemplifies the UAE’s commitment to public health by promoting immunity against infectious diseases and encouraging parents to stay vigilant in ensuring their children’s vaccinations are up-to-date.
