Salik PJSC has announced the introduction of two new toll gates in Dubai, set to go operational on Sunday, November 24, 2024. This addition will bring the total number of Salik gates in the city from eight to ten.
Locations of the New Toll Gates
The new toll gates will be strategically positioned at:
- Business Bay Gate: Located at the Business Bay Crossing on Al Khail Road.
- Al Safa South Gate: Situated on Sheikh Zayed Road between Al Meydan Street and Umm Al Sheif Street.
These locations are expected to significantly enhance traffic management in one of Dubai’s busiest areas.
Anticipated Impact on Traffic
Ibrahim Al Haddad, CEO of Salik, indicated that the new gates are projected to reduce traffic congestion by up to 16%. Specific reductions in traffic volume are anticipated as follows:
-
Business Bay Crossing Gate:
- 12-15% reduction on Al Khail Road.
- 10-16% reduction on Al Rabat Street.
-
Al Safa South Gate:
- 15% reduction in right-turn traffic from Sheikh Zayed Road to Meydan Street.
- Improved traffic flow between Financial Center Street and Meydan Street.
- Redistribution of traffic to wider First Al Khail Street and Al Asayel Street.
Additionally, the Al Safa South Gate will be technically integrated with the existing northern Al Safa gate, allowing for a single payment for those passing through both gates within an hour.
Commitment to Sustainability
In a move towards sustainable practices, Al Haddad emphasized that both new toll gates will operate on nearly 100% solar power. This initiative marks a significant step for Salik in aligning with Dubai’s green energy goals.
Clarification on Pricing Structure
Recently, Salik dismissed rumors circulating on social media regarding the implementation of dynamic pricing for toll gates. Al Haddad clarified that any changes to toll fees are subject to the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) and require approval from Dubai’s Executive Council. Currently, Salik charges a fixed fee of AED 4 for each vehicle passing through any toll gate.
In 2023, Salik recorded approximately 593 million journeys through its toll gates, generating AED 1.1 billion in revenue in the first half of 2024, reflecting a 5.6% increase from the previous year.
Future of Toll Gates in Dubai
When questioned about the possibility of additional toll gates in the future, Al Haddad noted that there is no established schedule for new gates. The decision to introduce new toll points will primarily depend on traffic and congestion levels, as determined by ongoing technical and traffic studies.
The overarching goal remains to enhance transportation efficiency and improve traffic flow across Dubai’s road networks.
