As the New Year approaches, gyms across Dubai are experiencing a surge in memberships, with residents eager to kickstart their fitness resolutions. Fitness centres like GymNation predict a 20-30% increase in sign-ups during January, reflecting a global trend of heightened health consciousness at the start of the year.
“January is one of the busiest months for gym memberships,” said William Rasmussen-Dean, UAE Country Director for GymNation. “We typically see a 20% rise in new memberships compared to an average month. However, the real rush picks up in the last two weeks of January, once people settle back into their routines.”
This trend is part of a larger health and wellness movement in Dubai, with the emirate’s fitness market currently valued at over $700 million and expected to exceed $1 billion in the coming years, according to Ken Research. Initiatives like the Dubai Fitness Challenge, which encourages residents to commit to 30 minutes of activity for 30 days, have further reinforced this momentum.
Residents are taking their fitness goals seriously this year. Sylvie, a Jumeirah resident, said, “I indulged a lot over the holidays, and now it’s time to focus on getting back in shape. This year, I’m determined to make fitness a habit.” Similarly, Venkatesh, 42, admitted to falling short of his resolution last year but vowed to stay consistent this time with smaller, achievable goals.
Fitness centres like Binous Gym in Al Quoz are also reporting higher enrolments. “We see a spike in sign-ups during this period, boosted by our promotions,” said Rizzy, a representative of the gym. Veo by Emaar Hospitality Group recently offered a New Year promotion, providing an extra month of access for early sign-ups.
Fitness experts emphasize setting realistic goals to maintain long-term motivation. “Don’t aim for overnight transformation,” advised Jassi, a trainer in Business Bay. “Consistency is key, even if it’s just 20-30 minutes a day.”
While surveys show 50-60% of adults set fitness or weight loss as their primary New Year resolution, maintaining these goals can be challenging. Research indicates that 50-65% of new gym-goers quit within the first six months, but those who stay consistent reap lasting benefits.
Dubai’s fitness culture continues to grow, and with the New Year’s surge, residents are determined to prioritize their health in 2025.
