Dubai achieved a significant milestone in sustainability and urban beautification in 2024, with the planting of 216,500 trees—an average of 600 trees daily—representing a 17% increase from 2023. These efforts contributed to a 57% rise in green spaces, equivalent to 391.5 hectares, as part of the emirate’s commitment to sustainability.

Expanding Dubai’s Green Canopy
The afforestation and landscaping initiatives were spearheaded by Dubai Municipality under its broader Dubai Green Project. Indigenous species like Ghaf, Sidr, and Samar were prioritized, along with ornamental trees such as neem, olive, and Indian jasmine. To enhance biodiversity, evergreen species like Washingtonia, Bismarckia, Poinciana, and Acacia franciana were also introduced.

Additionally, Dubai Municipality planted 5.3 million seedlings of flowers and ornamental plants while replacing 45 million seasonal flowers across three cycles during the year.

165 Beautification Projects
As part of the greening initiative, 165 beautification projects were completed in residential areas, urban spaces, public parks, family squares, and along main roads, secondary roads, and bridge intersections. These included landscaping prominent locations such as:

  • Sheikh Zayed Road
  • Al Khail Road
  • Sheikh Mohammed Bin Zayed Road
  • Al Jamayel Street
  • Latifa Bint Hamdan Street

Residential areas like Al Mizhar, Al Barsha, Nad Al Hammar, Mirdif, Abu Hail, and Oud Al Muteena also benefited from these projects.

Commitment to Sustainability
Badr Anwahi, CEO of the Public Facilities Agency at Dubai Municipality, highlighted the significance of these projects:
“The beautification and planting projects reflect our commitment to enhancing Dubai’s sustainability and aesthetic appeal. Through sustainable and innovative urban planning, we aim to balance modern agricultural practices with the unique character of our emirate.”

Anwahi added that these efforts improve air and soil quality, mitigate climate change impacts, and preserve biodiversity, contributing to a better quality of life for both residents and visitors.

Looking Ahead
Dubai Municipality’s ongoing initiatives align with the emirate’s vision for a sustainable future, creating vibrant, green communities while reinforcing its global reputation as a leader in urban innovation and environmental stewardship.
