In a significant move to alleviate traffic congestion, Dubai's Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has announced a new restriction on truck movement along a crucial stretch of Emirates Road. Effective from January 1, 2025, trucks will be banned from the segment between Al Awir Street and Sharjah from 5:30 PM to 8:00 PM.

Strategic Traffic Management

This decision follows the RTA's ongoing strategy to manage heavy vehicle traffic during peak hours, aiming to enhance the flow and safety of road travel. The initiative extends the measures introduced in April 2024, where truck movements were restricted during peak times on Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road. This latest measure targets evening rush hours, a critical period of high traffic volume.

Comprehensive Traffic Safety Enhancements

Major-General Saif Muhair Al Mazrouei, Acting Assistant Commandant for Operations Affairs at Dubai Police, detailed the extensive studies that led to this decision, emphasizing the need to mitigate risks associated with large vehicles during heavy traffic periods. "The primary goal is to reduce traffic accidents involving trucks and passenger vehicles, ensuring smoother and safer commutes for all road users," he explained.

Enforcement and Awareness Efforts

To ensure compliance, Dubai Police, in collaboration with the RTA, has ramped up efforts to inform truck drivers and transportation companies about the new regulations. "Awareness campaigns are crucial to the successful implementation of these restrictions," Major-General Al Mazrouei added. In 2024 alone, the police recorded 792 violations related to the non-adherence to truck ban timings.

Infrastructure and Communication Improvements

Hussain Al Banna, CEO of the Traffic and Roads Agency at RTA, noted that the agency would enhance signage and use various communication platforms to guide and inform truck drivers about alternative routes. "Informational and directional signs, along with multilingual media campaigns, will assist in rerouting truck traffic efficiently," said Al Banna.

Looking Forward

As Dubai continues to grow, managing traffic congestion remains a priority. The new truck movement restrictions on Emirates Road are part of a broader effort to improve traffic management and safety across the city. With these measures, the RTA hopes to foster a more orderly and efficient traffic environment, benefiting daily commuters and enhancing the overall quality of life in the emirate.

Additional Information

For truck drivers and companies seeking more details on the new timings and routes, resources are available through the RTA's customer service and its official website. The authority also plans to hold workshops and provide support to ensure a smooth transition to the new regulations.
