Dubai has unveiled the name of its first commercial flying taxi station as Dubai International Vertiport (DXV), marking a significant step in the city’s ambitious air mobility plans. Located near Dubai International Airport (DXB), DXV is one of four vertiports under development as part of Dubai's initial air taxi infrastructure. Operations are set to begin in 2026, authorities announced on Thursday.
Key Highlights of DXV and Air Taxi Infrastructure
1. Design Approval
- The General Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA) has approved the technical design of DXV under the newly established UAE Vertiport Regulations.
- The process included assessments of airspace, obstacle environments, layout, and firefighting strategies for battery and fuel-related incidents.
2. Collaboration and Development
- DXV is being developed by Skyports Infrastructure in partnership with Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) and Joby Aviation.
- The project highlights the UAE’s commitment to innovation in aviation, integrating cutting-edge technologies while adhering to global safety standards.
3. Capacity and Facilities
- DXV spans 3,100 square meters and will feature:
- A dedicated take-off and landing area.
- Electric charging facilities for air taxis.
- Passenger facilities including waiting areas and security procedures.
- The station will handle 42,000 landings and serve 170,000 passengers annually.
Phased Launch of Air Taxi Services
The first phase of Dubai’s air taxi project will involve four key stations:
- Dubai International Airport (DXV).
- Downtown Dubai.
- Dubai Marina.
- Palm Jumeirah.
A New Era in Urban Mobility
The air taxi project is set to redefine transportation in Dubai, promising faster, environmentally friendly commutes. GCAA Director-General Saif Mohammed Al Suwaidi emphasized that this milestone will "redefine urban mobility and set global benchmarks for integrating emerging aviation technologies."
Duncan Walker, CEO of Skyports, added, "The GCAA is pioneering the development of critical regulations to enable and scale air taxi operations throughout the UAE."
What’s Next?
- Trials Begin: Flying taxi trials will start in Al Ain by May 2025.
- Operations: DXV and other vertiports are expected to commence operations in early 2026.
- Future Expansion: Authorities are exploring a hybrid model that may utilize existing helipads as additional landing sites.
The unveiling of DXV brings the UAE closer to its vision of a futuristic, sustainable transportation network. With its innovative infrastructure and strategic planning, Dubai is poised to lead the global air taxi revolution.
