Dubai – China’s artificial intelligence (AI) powerhouse, DeepSeek, has made a dramatic entrance into the AI landscape, sparking conversations in the UAE about its potential to rival ChatGPT. The platform has been praised by some residents for delivering more natural, human-like responses, but a large-scale cyberattack has momentarily halted its momentum. DeepSeek’s emergence has also caused ripples in global markets, triggering a sell-off in AI giants like Nvidia, Microsoft, and Meta. The Chinese company claims to have developed its AI model at a fraction of the cost incurred by leading American firms, raising questions about whether it could democratize AI accessibility or ignite a pricing war in the industry.
A Growing Rival to ChatGPT? UAE Residents Weigh In
For many UAE residents, DeepSeek’s conversational tone and transparency in reasoning set it apart from existing AI models. Ajman-based student Iffah Sheeraz, who has used ChatGPT extensively, noted a distinct difference in responses between the two platforms.
"ChatGPT is reliable, but sometimes its responses feel repetitive or overly structured. DeepSeek, on the other hand, has a smoother flow—it feels closer to human conversation,” said the 18-year-old medical student.
Sheeraz highlighted a unique feature of DeepSeek, ‘DeepThink R1,’ which allows users to see how the AI reaches its conclusions. “With ChatGPT, you get an answer, but not always the reasoning behind it. DeepSeek’s transparency adds value, especially for complex queries.”
Dubai resident Kathrynne Nicole Alday, who explores AI tools to streamline workflows, was eager to try DeepSeek but encountered difficulties during registration.
"I was excited to test it, but when I tried signing up, I received a message about a large-scale malicious attack on DeepSeek’s servers. The verification code took three hours to arrive," said Alday.
Despite the setback, she remains optimistic. “It’s understandable that a new platform can face challenges. If DeepSeek delivers on its promises, it could help professionals work more efficiently and creatively.”
DeepSeek’s Market Impact: Disruptor or Temporary Hype?
DeepSeek’s rapid ascent has raised concerns among investors. The company claims to have built its AI model with just $5.6 million, a fraction of the costs incurred by OpenAI and other industry leaders. Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI, acknowledged DeepSeek as an “impressive model,” while former U.S. President Donald Trump called it a “wake-up call” for American AI firms.
Financial experts believe DeepSeek’s affordability could lead to price competition and cost-cutting strategies across the AI sector.
"Investors are concerned about AI infrastructure spending and pricing battles. However, while short-term market reactions seem volatile, the long-term outlook for AI remains strong," said Jacob Falkencrone, chief investment strategist at Saxo Bank. "Cheaper models like DeepSeek’s could open doors for smaller players, making AI more accessible.”
Skepticism Over DeepSeek’s Claims
Despite the excitement, some analysts remain cautious, questioning whether DeepSeek is a true disruptor or simply an optimized version of existing models.
"It’s too early to tell if DeepSeek is a game-changer. Its cost-effectiveness and technological advancements are intriguing, but the real test lies in its scalability and performance," said Manuel Villegas, digital assets analyst at Julius Baer.
He pointed out that DeepSeek employs a Mixture of Experts (MoE) architecture, a model that optimizes processing power rather than simply increasing computational resources—a strategy that differs from the Western approach.
Others have raised questions about DeepSeek’s financial claims. Ipek Ozkardeskaya, senior analyst at Swissquote Bank, expressed skepticism about whether DeepSeek could truly replicate high-performance AI models at such a low cost.
"Did DeepSeek genuinely develop a revolutionary AI for under $6 million? Or did it simply refine existing models for a lower price? If it delivers on its promise of high-quality AI at reduced costs, it could benefit businesses worldwide—particularly smaller firms with limited budgets," Ozkardeskaya said.
What’s Next for AI in the UAE?
DeepSeek’s rise could significantly impact AI adoption in the UAE, where businesses and residents are increasingly integrating AI-driven tools into daily operations. If the Chinese firm successfully challenges ChatGPT and other dominant AI models, it could usher in a new era of affordable, high-performance AI solutions.
As the dust settles from the recent cyberattack, the UAE’s tech community will be watching closely to see whether DeepSeek emerges as a legitimate challenger or fades into the backdrop of AI history.
