New York, United States: The unveiling of DeepSeek’s revolutionary AI model has sent shockwaves through global financial markets, erasing $108 billion from the net worth of the world’s richest individuals on Monday. The tech sector bore the brunt of the selloff, with Nvidia’s sharp decline leading the charge. Tech Titans Feel the Heat Jensen Huang, Nvidia’s co-founder and CEO, experienced the most significant loss, with his fortune dropping by $20.1 billion. Nvidia’s stock fell nearly 17%, wiping out $590 billion in market value as investors reacted to the rise of DeepSeek, a Chinese AI competitor.

Other billionaires affected by the selloff include:

  • Larry Ellison (Oracle Co-founder): Lost $22.6 billion due to Oracle’s 14% drop, which resulted in $71 billion in lost market value.

  • Michael Dell (Dell Technologies Founder): Suffered a $13 billion decline in net worth.

  • Changpeng “CZ” Zhao (Binance Co-founder): Faced a $12.1 billion loss amid the market rout.

DeepSeek’s Market Disruption DeepSeek, headquartered in Hangzhou, China, has garnered attention for its low-cost AI chatbot, developed for just $5.6 million. The model’s capabilities rival those of leading US tech companies, challenging the industry’s status quo. This development has sparked investor concerns about the competitive edge of American firms.

“DeepSeek’s innovation is reshaping the global AI landscape,” said Art Hogan, Chief Market Strategist at B. Riley Wealth. “The market’s reaction reflects uncertainty over how US companies will respond.”

Global Market Fallout The Nasdaq Composite Index plunged 3.1%, while the S&P 500 dropped 1.5%. International markets also felt the impact:

  • London’s FTSE 100 was flat at 8,503.71.

  • Paris’s CAC 40 slipped 0.3% to 7,906.58.

  • Tokyo’s Nikkei 225 fell 0.9% to 39,565.80.

As global investors assess the implications of DeepSeek’s rise, the tech sector faces mounting pressure to adapt. Earnings reports from industry leaders like Meta and Microsoft later this week will provide critical insights into their strategies for navigating this evolving landscape.
