In response to growing concerns about the physical strain on students from carrying heavy school bags, Abu Dhabi's Department of Education and Knowledge (Adek) has revised the weight limits for student backpacks. Private schools are now required to ensure that school bags weigh no more than 5-10% of a student's body weight. This change, based on recommendations from the American Chiropractic Association, is expected to improve the health and well-being of students across the capital.
Parents in Abu Dhabi have expressed relief at the new guidelines. Sheikha M, a mother of two, shared her concern about her children's daily struggle with heavy bags, stating, "It hurts to see them come home feeling drained. This policy will reduce that burden and create a healthier learning environment." Similarly, Nour Hatem, another parent, welcomed the decision, recalling her own school days when heavy bags caused similar issues.
Medical experts have also weighed in on the issue. Dr. Mamata Bothra, a pediatrician, highlighted the dangers of carrying heavy bags, which can lead to poor posture, back pain, and other health issues. The policy is set to be fully implemented by February 2026, with parents in other emirates like Dubai hoping for similar regulations. As students’ health takes center stage, the revision is expected to enhance overall student well-being and focus on academics without physical strain.
