Docked at the Abu Dhabi Cruise Terminal, the iconic Amerigo Vespucci, a 93-year-old Italian naval training ship, is captivating visitors with its rich history, elegant design, and timeless charm. Often dubbed the “world’s most beautiful ship,” the Vespucci offers a glimpse into the golden age of sailing with its classic wooden furniture and intricate craftsmanship.
A Captain’s Journey
Captain Giuseppe Lai, who dreamt of a life at sea since childhood, is at the helm of this historic vessel. “The Vespucci fulfills my childhood dreams of adventure,” said the 49-year-old captain, who led the ship on its second world tour starting in July 2023.
This journey marked the Vespucci’s first visit to the Gulf region, highlighting its importance to both Italy and the Middle East. “The Gulf is of utmost importance to the world and to Italy, so for us, it is very important to be here,” said Captain Lai.
A Historic Voyage
The ship’s tour included stops in South America, where it navigated the Patagonian Channels and the Magellan Strait, showcasing its resilience in challenging waters. “Sailing through untouched canals with no signs of mankind was a breathtaking experience,” said Lai.
A Living Classroom
The Vespucci serves as a floating academy for Italian Navy cadets, teaching traditional seamanship, resilience, and navigation skills. “Cadets learn how to navigate using wind and current, experiencing things you can’t learn from books,” Lai explained. The demanding conditions onboard test character and endurance, essential traits for future maritime leaders.
A Celebration of Italian Culture
While in Abu Dhabi from December 27-31, the ship hosted ‘Villaggio Italia,’ a mini-expo celebrating Italian culture with activities like pizza-making classes, live music, and film screenings. Residents and visitors of all ages flocked to experience the vibrant showcase of “Made in Italy” products and traditions.
Impressing Visitors
When asked what captivates visitors, Captain Lai said it’s the ship’s beauty and intricate details. “Every element on the ship has a purpose. What might seem decorative while docked is essential while sailing,” he noted, pointing to the ship’s deck and rigging as examples.
Lessons Learned at Sea
“This has been my longest sea journey and the most psychologically challenging,” Captain Lai shared. “The biggest lesson has been the power of cohesion—how unity helps overcome even the toughest obstacles.” Despite the challenges, Lai managed to reconnect with his wife during stops in Argentina and Abu Dhabi.
