In 1974, at just 19 years old, Indian expat B Abdul Jabbar arrived in the UAE, embarking on a journey that would span five decades. Starting as a ticket collector at Abu Dhabi’s El Dorado Cinema, Jabbar’s story is one of resilience, hard work, and gratitude.
Humble Beginnings
Born in Kannur, Kerala, Jabbar’s early life was rooted in simplicity. After completing his education up to seventh grade, he moved to the UAE on June 14, 1974, with help from a neighbor who secured his visa. Traveling by boat from Bombay, Jabbar arrived in Dubai and later settled in Abu Dhabi.
His first job was as a ticket collector at the only covered cinema in Abu Dhabi, which became a hub for diverse communities. This modest role marked the beginning of a long and fruitful career.
Career Milestones
Jabbar joined Al Majid General Company in 1976 as a clerk, working under Emirati brothers Hilal and Abdullah Majid Al Muheiry. Under their mentorship, Jabbar traveled globally for business, gaining valuable insights and skills.
In 2000, Jabbar became the General Manager of the wholesale division at Baniyas Spike Group, contributing to its transformation from a small business to a leading wholesale food supplier with over 1,000 employees and 150 vehicles.
Family and Personal Life
Jabbar married his wife, Rahmath, in 1979, but due to financial constraints, she joined him in the UAE only in 1985 with their three-year-old daughter. Over time, the couple built a strong family, now including three children and three grandchildren.
His wife recalls their early struggles: “We lived in a small one-bedroom setup without a proper kitchen. Despite the challenges, my husband worked tirelessly to support his family and siblings.”
Lessons from a Life Well-Lived
Jabbar credits his success to his mentor, Abdullah Majid Al Muheiry, whom he calls his “guru.” Even after leaving Al Majid General Company, their bond remained strong, exemplifying the values of loyalty and gratitude.
Reflecting on his journey, Jabbar says, “The UAE is a nation that empowers ordinary people to live with dignity and provide for their families. I am deeply thankful to the visionary leaders for this opportunity.”
A Legacy of Resilience
At 70, Jabbar continues to work six days a week and remains committed to his family and community. His story is a testament to the opportunities the UAE provides and the spirit of those who seize them. For Jabbar, retirement is not on the horizon; instead, he chooses to live a life of purpose and gratitude, embodying the resilience that defines the UAE’s success.
